Critics of urban and regional planning argue that it is best suited to manage incremental change. Can a planner's skills and expertise be effective in handling a major crisis and large-scale change? The mass immigration from the former Soviet Union to Israel in the 1990s offers the opportunity to study one of the largest-scale (non-disaster) crisis situations in a democratic, advanced-economy country. This book recounts the fascinating saga of how policymakers and planners at both the national and local levels responded to the formidable demand for housing and massive urban growth. Planners forged new housing and land-use policies, and applied a streamlined (but controversial) planning law. The outputs were impressive. The outcomes and impacts changed the landscape and human-scape of Israel, heightening dilemmas of land use and urban policy in this high-density country.

The two-volume set LNAI 7894 and LNCS 7895 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing, ICAISC 2013, held in Zakopane, Poland in June 2013. The 112 revised full papers presented together with one invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 274 submissions. The 56 papers included in the second volume are organized in the following topical sections: evolutionary algorithms and their applications; data mining; bioinformatics and medical applications; agent systems, robotics and control; artificial intelligence in modeling and simulation; and various problems of artificial intelligence.

Reviews in Computational Chemistry, Volume 27

This volume, like those prior to it, features chapters by experts in various fields of computational chemistry. Volume 27 covers brittle fracture, molecular detailed simulations of lipid bilayers, semiclassical bohmian dynamics, dissipative particle dynamics, trajectory-based rare event simulations, and understanding metal/metal electrical contact conductance from the atomic to continuum scales. Also included is a chapter on career opportunities in computational chemistry and an appendix listing the e-mail addresses of more than 2500 people in that discipline. FROM REVIEWS OF THE SERIES "Reviews in Computational Chemistry remains the most valuable reference to methods and techniques in computational chemistry." —JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR GRAPHICS AND MODELLING "One cannot generally do better than to try to find an appropriate article in the highly successful Reviews in Computational Chemistry. The basic philosophy of the editors seems to be to help the authors produce chapters that are complete, accurate, clear, and accessible to experimentalists (in particular) and other nonspecialists (in general)." —JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY

Implantation and Early Development

Implantation and Early Development

Successful implantation and early development need a union of healthy genes and an optimal uterine environment. The 48th RCOG Study Group, an international multidisciplinary expert forum, considered factors involved in preparation for implantation within the uterus; how to determine a good egg and good sperm; lessons from animal models; transgenic and genomic technologies; sporadic and recurrent early pregnancy loss; single-embryo transfer; and the developmental consequences of assisted reproduction technologies. This book presents the findings of the Study Group, with sections covering: • preparation for implantation - the uterine environment • the embryo • lessons from animal models (transgenics) and novel technologies • clinical sequelae.

Pelle is still just a young boy when his father decides to move them from Sweden to the Danish island of Bornholm in search of riches. Those riches—of course—being nonexistent, they fall into the life of farm laborers. As Pelle grows up among the other lowly and poor residents of the island, their cares and worries seep into him, and he finds himself part of a greater struggle for their dignity. Pelle the Conqueror has been compared to Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables in its themes and scope. Nexø had become involved in the Social Democratic movement in Denmark that flourished after the turn of the 19th century, and this work closely follows his journalistic observations of the struggles of the people. It was published in four books between 1906 and 1910, and was immensely popular; the first book in particular is still widely read in Danish schools, and was made in to an award-winning 1987 film starring Max von Sydow as Father Lasse. In this Standard Ebooks edition books one and four are translated by Jesse Muir, while books two and three are translated by Bernard Miall. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

This study examines the quality of teaching in higher education. It highlights and analyzes the fundamental issues which influence and underlie the quality of teaching in higher education. In particular, it focuses on students' and tutors' perceived needs, requirements and practices. It also addresses the question of whether, and in what ways, it is possible for teaching in higher education to meet the requirements and to satisfy the needs and preferences of both students and tutors.

First systematic analysis of modern architecture in Kuwait based on several years of research. From the late 1940s at the inception of the oil exporting industry, via political independence in 1961, through to the late 1980s when Kuwait was invaded, the citystate experienced an extraordinary social and civic transformation, deeply inscribed in its built environment. The old coastal town was radically transformed through architecture and urban planning in the process of gaining wealth and autonomy. Important foreign and local architects found here the possibility to expand their professional horizons and the challenge to compose an entire city, creating important examples of Late Modern Archit...
