Recent advances within the field of materials science in Spain
This manuscript originates from the different contributions presented in the Scientific Meeting of the Materials Institute throughout its first 10 years of existence. The Materials Institute “Instituto Universitario de Materiales de Alicante” (IUMA) organizes a scientific meeting each year (Scientific Meeting of the IUMA) with the objective of gathering outstanding researchers in the field of Materials Science in Spain, and get to know and discuss on the main research guidelines in this field. In the year 2014 these meetings reached their tenth edition with an international perspective. The book content is organized in five sections which represent current strategic research sectors in the field of Materials Science: Materials for Energy Applications, Nanomaterials, Materials Modeling, Catalysis, Functional Materials and Biomaterials. The thirty-six contributions presented here, distributed in these five relevant áreas of materials field make this book a suitable consultation manual, which will allow knowing in depth both physical and chemical aspects of different materials, as well as processes for their application.
Foams
Foams are ubiquitous in human life and can be found in a variety of products and materials, such as sodas and sponges. There are liquid foams and solid foams, both of which have distinct properties useful for various applications. This book reviews, researches, and summarizes the potential uses of foam fluids and porous foams in engineering, medicine, and other industries. Chapters discuss different types of foams including multiphase foams, cellular foams, and ceramic foams as well as foam-generating mechanisms and techniques.
Metal Matrix Composites
Metal Matrix Composites (MMC's) have found an increased use in various industries due to their special mechanical and physical properties. They are a composite material with at least two constituent parts, one being a metal and are made by dispersing a reinforcing material into a metal matrix. The markets are: telecommunications, automotive, power semiconductor, opto-electronics, military and aerospace, heavy transportation, space systems and satellites, medical, and industrial lighting. Applications within these markets include microwave, micro-electronic packaging, laser diode, HB-LED’s, and advanced radar.
PHEs, Environment and Human Health
This book is dedicated to the occurrence and behaviour of PHEs in the different compartments of the environment, with special reference to soil. Current studies of PHEs in ecosystems have indicated that many industrial areas near urban agglomerates, abandoned or active mines, major road systems and ultimately also agricultural land act as sources and at the same time sinks, of PHEs and large amounts of metals are recycled or dispersed in the environment, posing severe concerns to human health. Thanks to the collaboration of numerous colleagues, the book outlines the state of art in PHEs research in several countries and is enforced with case studies and enriched with new data, not published elsewhere. The book will provide to Stakeholders (both Scientists Professionals and Public Administrators) and also to non-specialists a lot of data on the concentrations of metals in soils and the environment and the critical levels so far established, in the perspective to improve the environmental quality and the human safety.
