Epidemiologi adalah ilmu yang mempelajari tentang distribusi dan determinan penyakit, serta upaya pengendalian penyakit tersebut. Ilmu epidemiologi telah berkembang sangat pesat dalam berbagai aspek kehidupan, sehingga ilmu ini bukan hanya tentang penyakit menular dan penyakit tidak menular saja tetapi aspek sosial perilaku, genetik dan biologi molekuler telah menjadi kajian epidemiologi. Berdasarkan hal tersebut maka bookchapter ini dikembangkan sebagai salah satu upaya menjelaskan mengenai teori dan prinsip epidemiologi dan memberikan contoh penggunaan dan aplikasi dalam pengendalian masalah-masalah kesehatan masyarakat. Dengan harapan penerapan ilmu epidemiologi dalam pengendalian penyakit bisa bermanfaat sebagai dasar pengambilan keputusan kebijakan kesehatan di populasi.

Symbiotic associations involving prokaryotes occur ubiquitously and are ecologically highly significant. In symbiotic associations, co-evolution of the partner organisms has led to specific mechanisms of signal exchange and reciprocal regulation, and resulted in novel physiological capabilities of the association as compared to those of the individual partners. Symbiosis research has recently entered an exciting era because molecular biology techniques are available for studying partner organisms in association and in a culture-independent manner. Cells in the developing embryo depend on signals from the extracellular environment to help guide their differentiation. An important mediator in this process is the extracellular matrix – secreted macromolecules that interact to form large protein networks outside the cell. During development, the extracellular matrix serves to separate adjacent cell groups, participates in establishing morphogenic gradients, and, through its ability to interact directly will cell-surface receptors, provides developmental clocks and positional information. This volume discusses how the extracellular matrix influences fundamental developmental processes and how model systems can be used to elucidate ECM function. The topics addressed range from how ECM influences early development as well as repair processes in the adult that recapitulate developmental pathways.
