World AIDS Day 2022: Putting ourselves to the test: achieving equity to end HIV
Since HIV was first identified in the early 1980s, we have had numerous scientific advancements to improve HIV prevention and treatment. However, there are still 38 million people currently living with HIV, and a proportion of them have developed Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The main issue with HIV and AIDs is inequalities: the communities affected are disproportionately distributed among the Global South. World AIDS Day takes place every year on the 1st of December and was founded in 1988 — making it the first global health day to be established. This year, the theme of World AIDS Day is equality. Tackling the inequalities surrounding HIV testing, prevention, care, and stigma among marginalized populations is the only way to not fall behind the targets of the third sustainable development goal of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030.

The concept of environmental justice has offered a new direction for social movements and public policy in recent decades, and researchers worldwide now position social equity as a prerequisite for sustainability. Yet the relationship between social equity and environmental sustainability has been little studied in Canada. Speaking for Ourselves draws together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal scholars and activists who bring equity issues to the forefront by considering environmental justice from multiple perspectives and in specifically Canadian contexts.

Probability
This textbook is based on a three-semester course of lectures given by the author in recent years in the Mechanics-Mathematics Faculty of Moscow State University and issued, in part, in mimeographed form under the title Probability, Statistics, Stochastic Processes, I, II by the Moscow State University Press. We follow tradition by devoting the first part of the course (roughly one semester) to the elementary theory of probability (Chapter I). This begins with the construction of probabilistic models with finitely many outcomes and introduces such fundamental probabilistic concepts as sample spaces, events, probability, independence, random variables, expectation, corre lation, conditional probabilities, and so on. Many probabilistic and statistical regularities are effectively illustrated even by the simplest random walk generated by Bernoulli trials. In this connection we study both classical results (law of large numbers, local and integral De Moivre and Laplace theorems) and more modern results (for example, the arc sine law). The first chapter concludes with a discussion of dependent random vari ables generated by martingales and by Markov chains.
