The London-based NaJa and deOstos architecture office was founded by Nannette Jackowski and Ricardo de Ostos as a platform for experimental architecture. The architects run their office as a studio that tackles the challenges arising from the manifold possibilities presented by urban situations and social dynamics by developing alternative urban concepts. One of their projects is the "Hanging Cemetery of Baghdad”, which they have continuously developed since 2004. In his introduction, Peter Cook says that as an architect, one could essentially go into denial in view of the harrowing situation in Baghdad. NaJa and deOstos research the situation and react with the language of experimental architecture.
Is the idea of an environment in architecture intrinsically reduced to 'environmental architecture', with its data gathering, percentages, and product lines, like solar panels and catalogues offering insulation solutions? For Ostos and Jackowski the answer is a resolute no, and instead they seek and endorse an alternative reading of 'environment' in which the brutal and lyrical are juxtaposed through a number of visually compelling narrative architectural explorations.
The home is one of our most enduring human paradoxes and is brought to light tellingly in science-fiction (SF) writing and film. However, while similarities and crossovers between architecture and SF have proliferated throughout the past century, the home is often overshadowed by the spectacle of 'otherness'. The study of the familiar (home) within the alien (SF) creates a unique cultural lens through which to reflect on our current architectural condition. SF has always been linked with alienation; however, the conditions of such alienation, and hence notions of home, have evidently changed. There is often a perceived comprehension of the familiar that atrophies the inquisitive and interpretive processes commonly activated when confronting the unfamiliar. Thus, by utilizing the estranging qualities of SF to look at a concept inherently linked to its perceived opposite - the home - a unique critical analysis with particular relevance for contemporary architecture is made possible.

Every five years from 1955 to 1985, mass Czechoslovak gymnastic demonstrations and sporting parades called Spartakiads were held to mark the 1945 liberation of Czechoslovakia. Involving hundreds of thousands of male and female performers of all ages and held in the world’s largest stadium—a space built expressly for this purpose—the synchronized and unified movements of the Czech citizenry embodied, quite literally, the idealized Socialist people: a powerful yet pliant force directed by the regime.
