Pathology of the Human Embryo and Previable Fetus

This book is designed primarily for anatomic pathologists to facilitate their task of accurately diagnosing embryos and fetuses. A detailed examination of the products of spontaneous and induced abortions is necessary for accurate genetic counseling and for establishing the risk for specific abnormalities or another spontaneous pregnancy loss in the future. The growing interest in the defects of early development reflects the profound change in general life-style. In the past, spontaneous abortions were considered a common, usually sporadic event in a patient's reproductive history. Only reassurance and encour agement were given to the patient and scant attention was paid to the detailed pat...

Pain and Prejudice

In 1978, when workers at a nearby phosphate refinery learned that the ore they processed was contaminated with radioactive dust, Karen Messing, then a new professor of molecular genetics, was called in to help. Unsure of what to do with her discovery that exposure to the radiation was harming the workers and their families, Messing contacted senior colleagues but they wouldn’t help. Neither the refinery company nor the scientific community was interested in the scary results of her chromosome studies. Over the next decades Messing encountered many more cases of workers around the world, factory workers, cleaners, checkout clerks, bank tellers, food servers, nurses, teachers, suffering and in pain without any help from the very scientists and occupational health experts whose work was supposed to make their lives easier. Arguing that rules for scientific practice can make it hard to see what really makes workers sick, in Pain and Prejudice Messing tells the story of how she went from looking at test tubes to listening to workers.

One Hundred Figure Drawings

  • Categories: Art

In 1927, the leading art schools of the United States were invited to participate in a contest sponsored by the Art Students League of New York. A well-known artist and teacher, George B. Bridgman, directed the jury that selected the best figure drawings. Afterward, Bridgman assembled this splendid gallery of the best images from the competition. Intermediate-level students will benefit from the study of these complete and detailed drawings. Sketches in charcoal, pencil, wash, pen and ink, and crayon include a tremendous variety of styles, poses, and techniques. In addition to its value as a handbook, this collection also offers an authentic reflection of the era's excellent draftsmanship.
