Belarus is often regarded as "Europe’s last dictatorship", a sort-of fossilized leftover from the Soviet Union. However, a key factor in determining Belarus’s development, including its likely future development, is its own sense of identity. This book explores the complex debates and competing narratives surrounding Belarus’s identity, revealing a far more diverse picture than the widely accepted monolithic post-Soviet nation. It examines in a range of media including historiography, films and literature how visions of Belarus as a nation have been constructed from the nineteenth century to the present day. It outlines a complex picture of contested myths – the "peasant nation" of the nineteenth century, the devoted Soviet republic of the late twentieth century and the revisionist Belarusian nationalism of the present. The author shows that Belarus is characterized by immense cultural, linguistic and ethnic polyphony, both in its lived history and in its cultural imaginary. The book analyses important examples of writing in and about Belarus, in Belarusian, Polish and Russian, revealing how different modes of rooted cosmopolitanism have been articulated.

Two twin sisters, natives of Dobratyche, a small Belarusian village on the Buh river close to the border with Poland, set out to examine the events that led to granny Makrynya's unexpected death. Their trek quickly turns into a murder investigation. As the twins uncover new facts of the crime, more questions need to be answered. But will they? A rural intrigue continues to hold the villagers firm in its grasp until the very resolution. Today mostly associated with the personality of President Lukashenka, Belarus remains terra incognita for the rest of the world. Babina's surprisingly fresh portrait of today's Belarus celebrates the country's diverse demographics be it business, education, culture or just the way people go about their daily errands. Quiet and shy, Belarus turns out to be the land of grandeur, vastness of spirit and passionate hearts and minds.

. Enjoying one of the best collections of Flemish art in the world, the Hermitage has paintings in all genres and examples of the work of the most famous painters and the less well known (over 140 different artists in all). Truly exceptional are the groups of paintings by the greatest Flemish artists of the seventeenth century: Rubens, Van Dyke, Jacob Jordaens, Snyders, David Teniers (the Younger). Outlining the history of the collection, the authors point out that the first works acquired for the Hermitage's painting collection by Catherine the Great in 1764 were Flemish. They also review the study of the collection and the art-historical puzzles that have been solved over the years. The paintings themselves are beautifully reproduced with many details revealing the virtuosity of the artists.
