Adverse outcomes of preeclampsia: From mother to baby, pregnancy to postpartum

Preeclampsia poses severe risks on both mother and baby during pregnancy. A large body of evidence now indicates that a history of preeclampsia also increases the risk of disease well beyond the index pregnancy. Studies show that mothers are at increased risk of cardiovascular, renal and neurological diseases. Babies are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, neurodevelopmental impairments and mental health disorders, across childhood, adolescence and adulthood. There is critical importance in understanding the pathophysiology of these outcomes to uncover appropriate therapeutic targets.

Requiring the separation of church from state, tolerance was secured by giving the state the sole authority to punish religious violence and to protect the individual freedoms of conscience and religion. Commitment to tolerance is independent of judgements about justice and the common good. This standard liberal history exerts a powerful hold on the modern imagination: it undergirds several important recent accounts of liberal tolera...

Plato's Epistemology

Plato's Epistemology presents an original interpretation of one of the central topics in Plato's work: epistemology. Moss argues, against the grain of much modern scholarship, that Plato's epistemology is radically different from our own.

Plato's "Socratic paradoxes" state that no one does wrong voluntarily and that virtue is knowledge. Outside of moral psychology, the importance of the Socratic paradoxes has been neglected. My dissertation defends two related proposals that showcase their importance in ancient epistemology. The first proposal is that they are a major motivation for Plato to develop a unique view of epistēmē (knowledge or understanding) as an infallible and robust cognitive power that is set over a special class of objects. The second proposal is that understanding the influence of the Socratic paradoxes can help us see how epistēmē improves our doxai (beliefs or opinions) about the world around us, solvi...
