Food safety hazards threaten the health and market access of smallholder farming households. Smallholders face a number of barriers to improving food safety and quality, including low awareness, high input costs, and the failure of premium prices to pass through to producers. Aflatoxins
Aflatoxins are a group of highly toxic and carcinogenic substances that occur naturally and can be found in food substances. Aflatoxins are secondary metabolites of certain strains of fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus as well as the less common Aspergillus nomius. Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 are the most important members, which can be categorized into two groups according to chemical structure. As a result of the adverse health effects of mycotoxins, their levels have been strictly regulated, especially in food and feed samples. Therefore, their accurate identification and determination remain a herculean task due to their presence in the complex food matrix. The great public concern and the strict legislation incited the development of sensitive analytical methods that are discussed in this book.
Buyers’ response to third-party quality certification: Theory and evidence from Ethiopian wheat traders
When quality attributes of a product are not directly observable, third-party certification (TPC) enables buyers to purchase the quality they are most interested in and reward sellers accordingly. Beyond product characteristics, buyers’ use of TPC services also depends on market conditions. Evidence continues to mount that foodborne illness imposes a staggering health burden in developing countries. However, standard approaches used by developed country governments to ensure food safety are not appropriate in settings where regulatory enforcement capacity is weak and most firms are small and informal. Small-scale farmers, certification schemes and private standards
Certification of agricultural products (organic certification, Fairtrade etc.) is often expected to provide a wide array of benefits for small-scale farmers. These include poverty alleviation, reduced environmental impact and food safety. This wide-ranging synthesis of 270 studies presents an analysis of the benefits – but also the costs – of such schemes. Crucially it demonstrates that the decision to invest must be based on sound economic principles. Clearly laid out and argued, the text also provides recommendations to improve the certification business case and impact on smallholders.
