Welche Funktionen vermochte die Mythologie in der Malerei nach der drastischen Aufklärungskritik noch zu erfüllen? Der englische Maler und Kunsttheoretiker Joshua Reynolds (1723-92) leistete mit seinen neuartigen Bildverfahren zur Beantwortung dieser Frage einen entscheidenden Beitrag.
