Burlington House
On Charles II's restoration to the throne in 1660, four of his supporters were provided with plots of land in a leafy suburb of 0London, on which to build their extravagant town palaces. The only one to survive - built for the poet and courtier Sir John 0Denham (1615-1669) and now situated in the heart of Piccadilly - became the home of the Royal Academy of Arts, its exhibitions and its Schools. This important study charts the history of the estate through its many owners, including the 3rd Earl of Burlington (1694-1753), who gave the house not only its name but also its distinctive and influential architecture. In his day, the house was host to leading scholars and celebrities, who met within Burlington's cutting-edge creation, which remains an unparalleled example of the Palladian style in England. Selling the Church
In the years of expanding state authority following the Black Death, English common law permitted the leasing of parishes by their rectors and vicars, who then pursued interests elsewhere and left the parish in the control of lay lessees. But a series of statutes enacted by Henry VIII between 1529 and 1540 effectively reduced such clerical absenteeism. Robert Palmer examines this transformation of the English parish and argues that it was an important part of the English Reformation. Palmer analyzes an extensive set of data drawn from common law records to reveal a vigorous and effective effort by the laity to enforce the new statutes. Motivated by both economic and traditional ideals, the litigants made the commercial activities of leaseholding and buying for resale and profit the exclusive domain of the laity and acquired the power to regulate the clergy. According to Palmer, these parish-level reformations presaged and complemented other initiatives of the crown that have long been considered central to the reign of Henry VIII.

150 Years of Eastern Oregon History
This book is a real story about an ordinary family from Albia, Iowa, who in 1862 crossed the Oregon Trail and settled in the lower Powder River Valley in what today is Baker City, Oregon. Within two years, family members were part of a thriving dry-goods and mercantile business in the gold-mining town of Mormon Basin, selling rubber boots, shovels, and liquor to both American and Chinese miners. By the late 1860s, the easy gold had been panned and sluiced out so the miners moved on to chase bigger dreams in newer places. So too did some of the family members; they sold their business interests and with a saddlebag full of gold rode north to Umatilla County, Oregon, where in 1871 they started a ranch and cattle business. Portions of James Shumway’s Couse Creek Ranch near Milton-Freewater are still owned by descendants; it is an Oregon State Centennial Ranch. This book uses old photographs, letters, documents, business journals, personal diaries, and contemporary research to recount 150 years of Barton–Shumway family history in eastern Oregon. It is a story told through the lives of some of the real people who survived it.
