This is the second book in the 'Health, Functioning and Technology' series. The focus of this book is on teaching, learning and assessment in rehabilitation education within the African context. The primary contributors to the book are authors from occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech-language therapy in South Africa. The authors discuss local contextual drivers for renewing rehabilitation professions curricula that support graduates in becoming competent, socially accountable, and dynamic. The foundational element of the chapters in the book is the African context and evidence-informed educational practice. We include the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on teaching, learning, student support and the integration of technology to assist in achieving the goals of the curricula. Through the different themes of transformative learning, curriculum renewal, technology for learning and clinical training key topics are covered on responsive curricula, leadership, interprofessional education, clinical competence, critical consciousness, peer teaching and learning, learning technologies, student support and emergency remote teaching and learning.

This scholarly book focuses on stroke in Africa. Stroke is a leading cause of disability among adults of all ages, contributing significantly to health care costs related to long term implications, particularly if rehabilitation is sub-optimal. Given the burden of stroke in Africa, there is a need for a book that focuses on functioning African stroke survivors and the implications for rehabilitation within the African context. In addition, there is a need to progress with contextualised, person-centred, evidence-based guidance for the rehabilitation of people with stroke in Africa, thereby enabling them to lead socially and economically meaningful lives. The research incorporated in the book used a range of primary and secondary methodological approaches (scoping reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, descriptive studies, surveys, health economics, and clinical practice guideline methodology) to shed new insights into African-centred issues and strategies to optimise function post-stroke.

Legal Aspects of Occupational Therapy

Since publication of the original edition in 1996, this book has established itself as an essential text for occupational therapists. It offers an understanding of the law relating to their practice, but is written to be accessible for those who have no prior legal knowledge. The text provides valuable information for occupational therapists employed in health and social services, as well as the law relevant to private practitioners. The book includes chapters on all the main client groups and presents the relevant specialist law. Students and teachers of occupational therapy will find the chapters on professional registration, education, training and research of particular interest. The third edition has been substantially revised to cover significant changes in legislation since the previous version. There is also a brand new chapter on the subject of death and dying. Legal Aspects of Occupational Therapy remains a key resource for the occupational therapy student, practitioner and service manager.

The Expressive Lives of Elders

Can traditional arts improve an older adult's quality of life? Are arts interventions more effective when they align with an elder's cultural identity? In The Expressive Lives of Elders, Jon Kay and contributors from a diverse range of public institutions argue that such mediations work best when they are culturally, socially, and personally relevant to the participants. From quilting and canning to weaving and woodworking, this book explores the role of traditional arts and folklore in the lives of older adults in the United States, highlighting the critical importance of ethnographic studies of creative aging for both understanding the expressive lives of elders and for designing effective arts therapies and programs. Each case study in this volume demonstrates how folklore and traditional practices help elders maintain their health and wellness, providing a road map for initiatives to improve the lives and well-being of America's aging population.
