The Commons
'The Commons' explores the many forms of development being championed by Africa's residents, users, and citizens. In addition to managing property and shared tangible and intangible resources collectively, communities are experimenting with a concept of 'commoning' founded on values such as community, engagement, reciprocity, and trust. In practice, their approach takes the form of land-based commons, housing cooperatives, hybrid cultural spaces or places for innovation, and collaborative digital platforms. The purpose of this book, where observation of historical and recent practices converges with new theories within commons scholarship, is not to promote commons themselves. Rather, it examines the tensions, drivers of change, and opportunities that surround commons dynamics in Africa. Au proviseur qui lui ordonne de révéler son contenu, Baudelaire répond par des ricanements. C'est la goutte d'eau qui fait déborder le vase. Exaspéré par l'insubordination dont le collégien n'a cessé de faire preuve depuis son arrivée à l'internat trois ans plus tôt, le proviseur le renvoie le jour même dans ses foyers. Bien que cette version des faits soit unanimement admise parmi les biographes du poète, des éléments nouveaux amènent cependant à la reconsidérer. Il existe en effet une autre raison à l'expulsion du jeune Baudelaire. Une raison autrement impérieuse, une raison plus intolérable encore que cette histoire de désobéissance et de billet avalé, une raison sans laquelle le proviseur aurait peut-être pris son mal en patience durant les trois mois qui lui restaient encore à devoir supporter ce sale gosse. Mais l'incendie est tel, il provoque un si grand préjudice que le fonctionnaire se met en devoir de le lui faire payer avant qu'il ne lui file entre les doigts.
