Islam and the Moral Economy

How do modern Muslims adapt their traditions to engage with today's world? Charles Tripp's erudite and incisive book considers one of the most significant challenges faced by Muslims over the last sixty years: the challenge of capitalism. By reference to the works of noted Muslim scholars, the author shows how, faced by this challenge, these intellectuals devised a range of strategies which have enabled Muslims to remain true to their faith, whilst engaging effectively with a world not of their own making. The work is framed around the development of their ideas on Islamic socialism, economics and the rationale for Islamic banking. While some Muslims have resorted to confrontation or insularity to cope with the challenges of modernity, most have aspired to innovation and ingenuity in the search for compromise and interaction with global capitalism in the twenty-first century.

The current view among Western scholars of Islam concerning the early development of Islamic jurisprudence was shaped by Joseph Schacht’s famous study on the subject published 50 years ago. Since then new sources became available which make a critical review of his theories possible and desirable. This volume uses one of these sources to reconstruct the development of jurisprudence at Mecca, virtually unknown until now, from the beginnings until the middle of the second Islamic century. New methods of analysis are developed and tested in order to date the material contained in the earliest compilations of legal traditions more properly. As a result the origins of Islamic jurisprudence can be dated much earlier than claimed by Schacht and his school.

What was "information" in the early eighteenth century, and what influence did the emergence of information, as potential physical and psychological threat, have on readers of the period? Recent scholarship in eighteenth-century print culture and in twenty-first-century media studies and theory offers a unique opportunity to reconsider how and why information is figuratively imagined during the eighteenth century as an abstract yet bodily entity that can flood, suffocate, and incapacitate readers. Focusing on 1678 to 1722 -- a period that experienced impressive innovations in communication -- this study reveals that the term "information" undergoes a significant transformation with social, c...

Case Studies in Allergic Disorders

Case Studies in Allergic Disorders is designed for undergraduate and graduate students in immunology, medical students, and resident physicians. It describes the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of commonly occurring allergic diseases and introduces the rationale for targeted treatment of allergy. Replicating the successful approach of Case Studies in Immunology, the book presents mechanisms of hypersensitivity through a selection of clinical cases that reinforce and extend the basic science. The cases are largely drawn from the records of Children‘s Hospital Boston. Linking the discussion of pathogenesis to actual clinical presentation establishes important connections between the bench and bedside. The book can be used as either a stand-alone text or asa companion to Janeway‘s Immunobiology and The Immune System.
