Housing market is important from a macroprudential perspective because it has a strong effect on the banking sector. Changes in real estate prices may affect the level of bank risk through household mortgage lending, however, the literature has no clear conclusion on this impact mechanism. Using a bank-level database containing quarterly data from 1998 to 2016 we estimated dynamic fixed-effects panel models to examine how bank risk is influenced by housing prices via mortgage lending in the Hungarian banking system. According to the results (1) higher house prices lead to higher bank risk, (2) the higher the share of mortgage loans at a bank, the stronger the positive effect of house prices ...

This paper presents a complex, modular, 1:1 scale model of the Hungarian residential housing market. All the 4 million house- holds and their relevant characteristics are represented based on empirical micro-level data coming from the Central Credit Information System, the Pension Payment database and transaction data of property sales collected by the National Tax and Customs Administration and the largest real estate agencies. The model features transactions in the housing and rental mar- kets, a construction sector, buy-to-let investors, housing loans, house price dynamics and a procyclical banking sector regulated by a macroprudential authority. The flats in the model are characterized w...

Hungarian Monetary Policy Operations Before, During, and After the Pandemic

Within its inflation-targeting framework, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) has frequently adjusted its monetary operations. This has raised questions about their internal consistency, appropriateness, and effectiveness. A broader assessment, implying a comparison to a counterfactual, is outside the scope of this paper. Our prior is agnostic. We find that the changes were generally well-motivated within the MNB statutory powers; prioritized, transparently explained, and monitored; and promptly adjusted, when they no longer served their purpose. Occasionally, some tools have worked at cross purposes. Government policies have at times hampered monetary policy. Simplicity comes with a premium, as complexity can blur signals.

The Fashion Industry and Eating Disorders

The world of fashion models is attractive for everybody. For the average audience, a fashion modelâ (TM)s life is glamourous, elegant and enviable, and many young women aspire to follow such ideals. Today, in the age of modern information technologies, there are endless tools for communicating with the world related to fashion. The daily lives of fashion models can be followed by the masses on social media platforms; they have become influencers, and millions follow the image they represent. However, in the background, there is stress and tension. The fashion industry creates fierce competition, and the models are under intense pressure concerning their body shape. The book investigates the role of the representatives of the fashion industry in the excessive ideal of slimness and in the enhanced risk of developing eating disorders. Ensuring the health of the models must be a fundamental aspect of the industry.
