This study places the Assumptio Mosis (AM) in its literary context of traditions of the 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD. It examines how in AM the biblical traditions have been adopted and adjusted (Deut 31 - Josh 1) to the actual circumstances. After presenting the current state of affairs in research and analysing the structure of the AM, the investigation focuses on a detailed account on how Deut 31 - Josh 1 has been incorporated in the AM and how this process affected the theological content. Furthermore the AM is put in a comparative perspective with other apocryphal traditions of the 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD (1-Enoch, T.12 Patr., Jub., 1-2-4 Macc, Ps Sal, Qumran texts, 4 Ezra, 2 Bar, Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum) to try and characterise the place of the AM within this contemporary literature. This process of reception is clarified against the background of the so-called Rewritten-Bible-phenomena. A pattern can be discerned within this process, whereby actualising and adjusting to the historical circumstances are major objectives.
In Revelations of Ideology, G. Anthony Keddie proposes a new theory of the social function of Judaean apocalyptic texts produced in Early Roman Palestine (63 BCE–70 CE). In contrast to evaluations of Jewish and early Christian apocalyptic texts as “literature of the oppressed” or literature of resistance against empire, Keddie demonstrates that scribes produced apocalyptic texts to advance ideologies aimed at self-legitimation. By revealing that their opponents constituted an exploitative class, scribes generated apocalyptic ideologies that situated them in the same exploited class as their constituents. Through careful historical and ideological criticism of the Psalms of Solomon, Parables of Enoch, Testament of Moses, and Q source, Keddie identifies an internally diverse tradition of apocalyptic class rhetoric in late Second Temple Judaism.

This study identifies and explores texts of restoration in a wide selection of Early Jewish Literature in order to assess the variety of ways in which Jews envisioned Israel’s future restoration. Particular attention is given to the expression of restoration in what is identified in the present study as the exilic model of restoration. In this model, Israel’s restoration is characterized by the features of (a) a future re-gathering, (b) the fate of the nations, and (c) the establishment of a new Temple. The present work focuses primarily on the first two features. Through this framework Jews in the Greco-Roman period could draw on Israel’s history and legacy, but re-appropriate ‘exile and return’ in new and creative ways. Finally, the writing of Luke-Acts is investigated for its ideas of restoration and its indebtedness to Early Jewish traditions.

The Pseudepigrapha on Sexuality is the third of five volumes by William Loader exploring attitudes toward sexuality in Judaism and Christianity during the Greco-Roman era.
