Paleogene Fossil Birds

Paleogene Fossil Birds

In the present book the Paleogene fossil record of birds is detailed for the first time on a worldwide scale. I have developed the idea for such a project for several years, and think that it is an appropriate moment to present a summary of our c- rent knowledge of the early evolution of modern birds. Meanwhile not only is there a confusing diversity of fossil taxa, but also significant progress has been made concerning an understanding of the higher-level phylogeny of extant birds. Hypotheses which were not considered even a decade ago are now well supported by independent analyses of different data. In several cases these group together morphologically very different avian groups and allow a better understanding of the mosaic character distribution found in Paleogene fossil birds. The book aims at bringing some of this information together, and many of the following data are based on first-hand examination of fossil specimens.

The Bennetts

The Bennetts: An Acting Family is a chronicle of one of the royal families of stage and screen. The saga begins with Richard Bennett, a small-town Indiana roughneck who grew up to be one of the bright lights of the New York stage during the early twentieth century. In time, however, Richard's fame was eclipsed by that of his daughters, Constance and Joan, who went to Hollywood in the 1920s and found major success there. Constance became the highest-paid actress of the early 1930s, earning as much as $30,000 a week in melodramas. Later she reinvented herself as a comedienne in the classic comedy Topper, with Cary Grant.. After a slow start as a blonde ingenue, Joan dyed her hair black and bec...

Workmanship

today, the name RKW Architektur + Städtebau evokes two hundred architects whose work never fails to convince. The reason does not lie in the narrowly defined architectural language of individual leaders of the firm. More than in any other firm, the various teams are given generous latitude for independent initiative. Thus, this documentation of the last ten years, with cross - references to the development of this unique partnership since 1950, doesn’t just present sixty - five structures and projects from an internationally sought - after firm. On the contrary, in its search for the secret of the firm’s success, it looks behind the scenes in numerous interviews and essays. The works considered range from the research facilities for AUDI, the new sciences campus of RWTH Aachen University, and the corporate headquarters of Vodafone, Debitel, and Arag to urban revitalization projects, residential buildings, schools, sports halls, railroad stations, city halls, banks, urban office buildings and shopping centers, and the stadium for the 2012 European Soccer Championship in Gdansk.

With String Theory to the Big Bang

This book takes the reader on a journey to the Big Bang, learning on the way about various physical facts, observations, and theories. String theory is introduced as a possible all-encompassing physical theory that has the potential to grasp and describe the Big Bang. Its sometimes-spectacular predictions, such as additional spatial dimensions or parallel universes, are explained concisely.

The Logic of Pronominal Resumption

This book is a cross-linguistic investigation of resumptive pronouns and related phenomena. Pronominal resumption is the realization of the base of a syntactic dependency as a bound pronoun. Resumption occurs in unbounded dependencies, such as relative clauses and questions, and in the variety of raising known as copy raising. Processing factors may also give rise to resumption, even in environments where it does not normally occur in a given language. Ash Asudeh proposes a new theory of resumption based on the use of a resource logic for semantic composition and the typologically robust observation that resumptive pronouns are ordinary pronouns in their morphological and lexical properties....

The highly frequent word items TO and OF are often conceived merely as prepositions, carrying little meaning in themselves. This book disputes that notion by analysing the usage patterns found for OF and TO in different sets of text corpora.

Alfred Bergel

In a remarkable deed of original scholarly research and detailed detective work, Anne Weise recreates sketches of a lost life – of one of the millions of forgotten souls whose lives came to a violent end in the Holocaust. Her focus is Alfred Bergel (1902–1944), an artist and teacher from Vienna who was a close associate of Karl König – the founder of the Camphill Movement for people with special needs – who wrote of Bergel in his youthful diaries as his best friend ‘Fredi’. After the annexation of Austria, Alfred Bergel found himself unable to escape the horror of the National Socialist regime. Subsequently, in 1942 he was deported to the Theresienstadt camp. Imprisoned there, h...
