The Many-Body Problem in Quantum Mechanics

Single-volume account of methods used in dealing with the many-body problem and the resulting physics. Single-particle approximations, second quantization, many-body perturbation theory, Fermi fluids, superconductivity, many-boson systems, more. Each chapter contains well-chosen problems. Only prerequisite is basic understanding of elementary quantum mechanics. 1967 edition.

Many-body Theory of Molecules, Clusters, and Condensed Phases

This book provides a comprehensive review of seminal as well as recent results in the theory of condensed phases, including liquid metals, quantum liquids and Wigner crystals, along with selected applications, especially in the physical chemistry of molecules and clusters. A large part of this work is dedicated to the Thomas-Fermi semiclassical approximation for molecules and condensed phases, and its extension to inhomogeneous electron liquids and liquid metals. Correlation effects in quantum liquids and Wigner crystallization are other areas of focus of this work, with an emphasis towards the effect of low dimensionality and magnetic fields. The volume is a collection of reprints by N H Ma...

A full discussion of liquid structure theories for simple monoatomic liquids such as liquid argon or liquid lead is followed by discussion of both the structure of diatomic fluids such as liquid nitrogen and of molten salts. There are chapters on the thermodynamics and structure of electrolytes, on atomic transport, neutron scattering and time-dependent correlation functions, as well as treatment of chemical reactions in solution, beginning with a discussion of stochastic equations. Crystalline Semiconducting Materials and Devices

This book is concerned primarily with the fundamental theory underlying the physical and chemical properties of crystalIine semiconductors. After basic introductory material on chemical bonding, electronic band structure, phonons, and electronic transport, some emphasis is placed on surface and interfacial properties, as weil as effects of doping with a variety of impurities. Against this background, the use of such materials in device physics is examined and aspects of materials preparation are discussed briefty. The level of presentation is suitable for postgraduate students and research workers in solid-state physics and chemistry, materials science, and electrical and electronic engineer...

Self-Consistent Fields in Atoms: Hartree and Thomas-Fermi Atoms covers the various aspects of atomic properties, including energy levels, binding energies, X-ray scattering activity, and magnetic properties. This book emphasizes the Hartree field concept. This book is organized into two parts encompassing 13 chapters. Part I examines first the concepts of central field wave functions and angular momentum operators. This part also deals with the concept of self-consistent field, Thomas-Fermi atom, energies of atoms and ions, and other atomic properties. The electron-electron correlation and the relativistic effects in heavy atoms are reviewed in this part. Part II presents the applications of the theory and methods used for determining the characteristic values and functions of Schrödinger’s wave equations for a non-Coulomb central field of force. This part also looks into the simplification of the Hartree-Fock method. This book will prove useful to physicists and researchers in the allied fields.

Three pages of correspondence relating to Norman Henry Booth, a member of the 5th Field Company Engineers in World War One. Booth enlisted in Melbourne on 30 March 1915 to the Royal Australian Navy as part of the Royal Australian Navy Bridging Train, a land-based unit that was expected to transfer supplies to troops via a train-like convoy of wagons. He rose to the rank of sergeant and was transferred to the 5th Field Company Engineers, where he was mentioned in a dispatch for his 'distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty in the field during the period February 26th to midnight 20th [sic]' in 1917. On 12 August 1918, Booth suffered a shrapnel injury to his knees in combat and required a double amputation. He returned to Australia in 1919. His brother, Reginald Nathaniel Booth, was discharged from the military in 1916 after contracting suspected trench nephritis. He returned home to his mother in Queensland, where died in 1918.

Electron Correlations In The Solid State

This invaluable book deals with the many-electron theory of the solid state. Mastery of the material in it will equip the reader for research in areas such as high-temperature superconductors and the fractional quantum Hall effect. The whole book has been designed to provide the diligent reader with a wide variety of approaches to many-electron theory. The level of the book is suitable for research workers and higher-degree students in a number of disciplines, embracing theoretical physics, materials science and solid-state chemistry. It should be useful not only to theorists in these areas but also to experimental scientists who desire to orient their programmes to address outstanding questions raised by many-body theory.
