"This publication documents four chapters of the exhibition Re/discovery and memory. The retrospectives of eminent South African sculptors, Sydney Kumalo and Ezrom Legae - the first to be undertaken by any institution globally - chronicles their innovative artistic practices. They are presented alongside fellow sculptor and friend Edoardo Villa, whose work between 1958-68 gives insight into the interactions of these artists associated with Polly Street Art Centre and the Amadlozi Group. Working with his ongoing concern regarding the notion of displacement, Serge Alain Nitegeka's contemporary practice - as experienced through his immersive installation - offers us a means for reassessing Villa's own engagement with immigration, as seen in his early works"--back cover.

David Goldblatt grew up in the South African town of Randfontein, which was shaped by the social culture and financial success of the gold mines surrounding it. When these mines started to fail in the mid-sixties Goldblatt began taking photos of them, which form the basis of 'On the Mines'. The book features an essay on the human and political dimensions of mining in South Africa by Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, whose writing has long influenced Goldblatt.

Elias Sime

  • Categories: Art

A first-ever monograph featuring the work of the Ethiopian artist Elias Sime, who brilliantly explores the impact of life in a post-consumerist world. Sime's brightly-colored sculptural tableaus feature found objects including thread, buttons, electrical wires, and computer detritus. This book highlights the artist's work from the last decade, much of which comprises the series entitled "Tightrope." Repurposing salvaged electronic components, such as circuits and keyboards, Sime incorporates the refuse that are the byproducts of technological advancement, and points to the urgency of sustainability. The resulting abstractions reference landscape and the figure as well as traditional Ethiopian textiles. "Tightrope" refers to the precarious balance between the progress technology has made possible and its detrimental impact on the environment. Published with the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art
