Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Alphonso W. Knight Sr., is a retired architectural engineer, teacher, and college administrator. He served as superintendent of buildings and grounds at Fessenden Academy in Martin, Florida and at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. He taught in the public school system is St. Louis, Missouri and taught at Forest Park College in St. Louis, Missouri. Coupled with his teaching, he practiced architecture. He earned a B.S. degree in architectural engineering from Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia in 1947, a M.A. degree in Mathematics from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, and did further study at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri. His work experience also includes alumni administration at both Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a consultant in alumni affairs to more than 25 institutions of higher education.
Sexual Health and Black College Students
This book explores the various psychosocial, sociocultural, and contextual factors that affect the sexual health of Black students who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and how this environment can help develop strategies to improve sexual health outcomes for its students. The college environment provides young people with a new sense of independence, self-determination, and peer pressure to engage in risky sexual behaviors, and research has shown that Black students at HBCUs bear a disproportionate burden of poorer sexual health outcomes than students at predominately white institutions (PWIs). Commissioned by God
"Commissioned By God" is written by a Minister's Wife who felt the Spirit of the Lord move in her to write an inspirational book. It was not a matter of if she would write, but when should she get started. At the time, she was very busy between working part-time and her involvement with various activities at her church. Although she had no qualms about writing the book, she took too long and the Lord spoke to her while she was out training for a race, and said NOW!!! He also gave her the name of the book which is "Commissioned By God." After returning home, she immediately started writing the book, and turned in her resignation from her job the very next day.
Maintaining Sanity in the Midst of Unrelenting Oppression
When asked by the publisher of this manuscript to write a brief statement for the cover of this book, we were immediately driven to the second stanza of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by James Weldon Johnson and J.R. Rosamond Johnson. The second stanza says, Stony the road we trod Bitter the chastening rod Felt in the days when hope unborn had died Yet with a steady beat Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered Out from the gloomy past Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast To our sisters and brothers, keep praying, keep singing, and keep going to safe places to cry! Our sanity demands.
