This second volume of the series on photorefractive effects focuses on the most recent developments in the field and highlights the parameters which govern the photoinduced nonlinearity. Besides reviewing conventional electro-optic crystals, this book deals with organic photorefractive materials, giving an in-depth assessment of the present understanding of the effect in a variety of materials. The materials considered in this volume will play a significant role in the development of applications such as presented in the third volume.
Helmut Newton, Archives de Nuit
This book gets its name from 60 unusually dark and cryptic photographs. When Newton opened his "Archives of the Night" in the 90's, gloomy images emerged like flocks of bats. His famous "Domestic Nudes" appeared in pairs and tableaus together with sinister landscapes. Palace architecture was displayed next to morbid vanitas paintings as were bodies cut open from an anatomical museum of wax figures, placed on show alongside a portrait of a Dracula star putting on his make-up. With the Archives, Newton, who decided on the placement of these works himself, showed us his dark side. But at the same time, he was amusing himself with grey areas - also typical for Newton. The juxtaposition of seemingly disparate motifs created new and enigmatic relationships that oscillate between satire and poetry, brutality and gentleness, irony and pathos.
Properties of Perovskites and Other Oxides
In this book some 50 papers published by K A Mller as author or co-author over a period from 1959 till 2009, amplified by more recent work mainly by T W Kool with collaborators are reproduced. The main subject is Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) applied to the study of perovskites and other oxides with related subjects. This wealth of papers is organized into eleven chapters, each with an introductory text written in the light of current understanding. Dry Eye

A Practical Guide to Dry Eye Disease

After its publication in The New England Journal of Medicine1, we reassessed our text, especially with regard to the use of omega-3 fatty acids. We applaud the researchers’ diligence in examining the value of omega-3 fatty acids. While this study certainly enhances our understanding of dry eye disease, it does not obviate the use of all omega-3 fatty acids, which remain an important treatment option for dry eye disease. We are grateful to our expert and experienced contributing authors for the hard work and generous thoughtfulness put into sharing their knowledge. To reflect a diversity of perspectives, we recruited leaders in the field throughout North America from a variety of practice settings including university-based and private.
