The Offensive is significant and representative Soviet military writing, translated and published under the auspices of the United States Air Force in 1970. Soviet Party-military spokesmen stipulate that introduction of nuclear weapons into their armed forces brought about "a revolution in military affairs." They further state this "revolution" has caused complete revisions in Soviet military doctrine, strategy and tactics. The study of history shows that in armed conflict victory over the enemy can best be achieved through offensive actions. It is the offensive that assures complete defeat of the enemy and seizure of important objectives and regions. This is the view expressed by Colonel A. A. Sidorenko, Doctor of Military Science and faculty member of the Frunze Military Academy, in The Offensive. His work was listed as recommended reading in "The Soldier?s Bookshelf" section of the annual Calendar of a Soldier. Colonel Sidorenko is a well-known Soviet military spokesman with many credits to his name. Colonel Sidorenko provides the student of military affairs with an enhanced understanding of Soviet military thought.

The Ideology of the Offensive

Jack Snyder's analysis of the attitudes of military planners in the years prior to the Great War offers new insight into the tragic miscalculations of that era and into their possible parallels in present-day war planning. By 1914, the European military powers had adopted offensive military strategies even though there was considerable evidence to support the notion that much greater advantage lay with defensive strategies. The author argues that organizational biases inherent in military strategists' attitudes make war more likely by encouraging offensive postures even when the motive is self-defense. Drawing on new historical evidence of the specific circumstances surrounding French, Germa...

Military scientists include theorists, researchers, experimental sc...

An overview of offense-defense theory, which argues that the relative ease of offense and defense varies in international politics. Offense-defense theory argues that the relative ease of offense and defense varies in international politics. When the offense has the advantage, military conquest becomes easier and war is more likely; the opposite is true when the defense has the advantage. The balance between offense and defense depends on geography, technology, and other factors. This theory, and the body of related theories, has generated much debate and research over the past twenty-five years. This book presents a comprehensive overview of offense-defense theory. It includes contending views on the theory and some of the most recent attempts to refine and test it.

Airpower And The Cult Of The Offensive

Airpower And The Cult Of The Offensive

The belief that airpower is inherently offensive is a recurrent theme throughout airpower theory and doctrine. Before World War I, dogmatic belief in the dominance of the offense in land warfare affected the military decisions which resulted in the disaster of the trenches. Termed the “cult of the offensive” by scholars, faith in offense became so unshakable in pre-1914 Europe that military organizations dismissed as irrelevant the numerous indications of the waning power of the offense as technological developments strengthened the defense. With airpower’s professed inclination for offense, could a cult of the offensive perniciously trap airpower doctrine and lead to similarly disastr...
