The Landscape of Lexicography
This book consists of a series of papers that look at three different aspects of the landscape as seen in dictionaries from across Europe. Multilingual diachronic case studies into lexicographical descriptions of flora, landscape features and colours concentrate on three supposedly simple words: daisies (Bellis perenis L.), hills and the colour red. The work is part of the ongoing LandLex initiative, originally developed as part of the COST ENeL - European Network for e-Lexicography - action. The group brings together researchers in lexicography and lexicology from across Europe and is dedicated to studying multilingual and diachronic issues in language. It aims to valorise the wealth of European language diversity as found in dictionaries by developing and testing new digital annotation tools and a historical morphological dictionary prototype. Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering
The two-volume set LNBI 11465 and LNBI 11466 constitutes the proceedings of the 7th International Work-Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering, IWBBIO 2019, held in Granada, Spain, in May 2019. The total of 97 papers presented in the proceedings, was carefully reviewed and selected from 301 submissions. Metaphor and Metonymy in Comparison and Contrast
The book elaborates one of Roman Jakobson's many brilliant ideas, i.e. his insight that the two cognitive strategies of the metaphoric and the metonymic are the end-points on a continuum of conceptualization processes. This elaboration is achieved on the background of Lakoff and Johnson's twodomain approach, i.e. the mapping of a source onto a target domain of conceptualization. Further approaches dwell on different stretches of this metaphor-metonymy continuum. Still other papers probe into the specialized conceptual division of labor associated with both modes of thought. Two new breakthroughs in the cognitive linguistics approach to metaphor and metonymy have recently been developed: one is the three-domain approach, which concentrates on the new blends that become possible after the integration or the blending of source and target domain elements; the other is the approach in terms of primary scenes and subscenes which often determine the way source and target domains interact.
Linguistic Politeness Across Boundaries
This volume includes 14 papers investigating politeness phenomena in Greece and Turkey, the cultural cross-roads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It reflects current research and provides observations of and findings in patterns of linguistic politeness in a geographical area other than the much studied English speaking ones. The book appeals to professionals and students interested in a broader perspective of language use in its social context.Articles in the collection are empirically rather than theoretically oriented and examine realisations of politeness in relation to social parameters. The chapters have been arranged in pairs (Greek/Turkish), treating the following related issues: firstly a more general ethnographic picture of the two societies, the variables of power/status in classroom and other interaction, solidarity in advice-giving and the use of approbatory expressions, service encounters and the differential use of language by males and females, the use of interruptions in television talk, and finally compliments.
Giving Voice to Silence
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2016. Silence must be one of the words in the English language that has one of the most varied and bizarrely contradictory set of notions connected to it. This book explores the multiple dimensions, the binary opposites and contradictions, and gives voice to silence in all its monologic, dialogic and absent glory. The chapters are collated from authors around the world who came together at an Inter-Disciplinary Press conference in July 2015 to discuss and deliberate on the nature of silence. Each author provides his or her own particular perspective, resulting in a range of writing which addresses silence across religious, inter-personal, social and political, literary, spatial and artistic dimensions. The collection as a whole highlights and embraces some of the strange paradoxes of silence and asks an implicit question: how, through giving voice to silence, might we re-imagine what is present, visible and audible in our lives?
