Ornithopters are air vehicles that fly using flapping wings as lift and propulsion. The study of ornithopter flight dynamics is complicated by time-varying aerodynamics and no dynamic steady state. Using quasi-steady aerodynamics, a Newton-Euler dynamic model of ornithopter flight is utilized to study ornithopter stability and flight dynamics. Floquet analysis is used to analyze these periodic steady flight regimes. This model is then used to analyze and synthesize stabilizing controllers for forward flight and hovering flight. A novel controller is a discrete-time periodic linear quadratic regulator, useful for steady periodic flight dynamics. The model is exploited further to analyze and o...

Birds and bats employ a variety of advanced wing motions in the efficient production of thrust. The purpose of this thesis is to quantify the benefit of these advanced wing motions, determine the optimal theoretical wing kinematics for a given flight condition, and to develop a methodology for applying the results in the optimal design of flapping-wing aircraft (ornithopters). To this end, a medium-fidelity, combined aero-structural model has been developed that is capable of simulating the advanced kinematics seen in bird flight, as well as the highly non-linear structural deformations typical of high-aspect ratio wings. Five unique methods of thrust production observed in natural species ha...

The work described in this thesis represents a set of novel solutions to several challenges involved in the design and flight of hovering ornithopters as well as the measurement and analysis of lift forces produced by wings flapping in air. First, a method was developed to 3D print functional flapping wings. The use of 3D printing technology has greatly expanded the possibilities for wing fabrication, allowing wing shapes and structures to replicate those of real insects or virtually any other design. It has also reduced the time required for wing fabrication to under one hour. A passively stable hovering ornithopter with a mass of 3.89 grams was constructed using the 3D printing technique a...

Flapping wing vehicles (FWVs) have unique flight characteristics and the successful flight of such a vehicle depends upon efficient design of the flapping mechanisms while keeping the minimum weight of the structure. Flapping Wing Vehicles: Numerical and Experimental Approach discusses design and kinematic analysis of various flapping wing mechanisms, measurement of flap angle/flapping frequency, and computational fluid dynamic analysis of motion characteristics including manufacturing techniques. The book also includes wind tunnel experiments, high-speed photographic analysis of aerodynamic performance, soap film visualization of 3D down washing, studies on the effect of wing rotation, figu...
