Over the past years, significant changes have occurred in the corporate sector arising from globalization, increasing international competitiveness, and intensive use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). These developments have led to new corporate and social behaviors that are affecting the entire corporate value chain. Thus, business organizations are focusing on technological innovation as a driving force of development. Emerging Tools and Strategies for Financial Management is a pivotal reference source that explores both practical and theoretical perspectives on how financial management is evolving and how future consequences of technological innovation will affect individuals, businesses, and society. While highlighting topics such as financial imbalance, venture capital, and shadow banking, this publication explores the relationship between companies and their customers and the methods of generating changes in today’s enterprises. This book is ideally designed for business managers, financial analysts, financial controllers, directors, finance officers, treasurers, entrepreneurs, CEOs, academicians, students, and research professionals.

Within the emerging Latin American consensus on development, human resource investments are considered essential for reducing poverty and integrating economic growth and social reform. Investing in people enables work forces to adapt to rapidly changing markets and share in the benefits of economic growth. Human Resources in Latin America and the Caribbean examines investments across the region in education, training, health and nutrition. The book points to the impact of human resource investment on productivity and income distribution, and examines how changes in human resource policies - particularly those affecting the delivery of social services - could substantially improve returns in several key areas of development. Although a survey finds Latin America's human resources fare relatively well by international comparison - with high investment levels in some countries associated historically with good macroeconomic performance - important gaps and inadequate investment in recent years are cause for concern.

Handbook of Latin American Studies, Vol. 61

"The one source that sets reference collections on Latin American studies apart from all other geographic areas of the world.... The Handbook has provided scholars interested in Latin America with a bibliographical source of a quality unavailable to scholars in most other branches of area studies." —Latin American Research Review Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 140 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year b...

Forbearance as Redistribution

Forbearance as Redistribution

Why do governments tolerate the violation of their own laws and regulations? Conventional wisdom is that governments cannot enforce their laws. Forbearance as Redistribution challenges the standard interpretation by showing that politicians choose not to enforce laws to distribute resources and win elections. Alisha Holland demonstrates that this forbearance towards activities such as squatting and street vending is a powerful strategy for attracting the electoral support of poor voters. In many developing countries, state social programs are small or poorly targeted and thus do not offer politicians an effective means to mobilize the poor. In contrast, forbearance constitutes an informal welfare policy around which Holland argues much of urban politics turns. While forbearance offers social support to those failed by their governments, it also perpetuates the same exclusionary welfare policies from which it grows.

Heat transfer calculations in different aspects of engineering applications are essential to aid engineering design of heat exchanging equipment. Minimizing of computational time is a challenging task faced by researchers and users. Methodology of calculations in some application areas are incorporated in this book, such as differential analysis of heat recoveries with CFD in a tube bank, heating and ventilation of equipment and methods for analytical solution of nonlinear problems. Numerical analysis is the prerequisite of design and for the manufacture of heat exchanging equipment. Some numerical and experimental information are presented with utmost skill. Similarly, the analytical solution of heat transfer is touched in this book. Study of heat transfer phenomena and applications are equally emphasized in this issue.
