Óscar Gómez Vidal, poeta, narrador, educador y abogado cubano, nació en la ciudad de Cienfuegos el 26 de junio de 1923 y muy joven aún se trasladó a La Habana, en cuya universidad obtuvo los títulos de Doctor en Leyes y de Licenciado en Derecho Diplomático y Consular en 1946. Al año siguiente publicó su primer libro de poemas, Canto del faro en el mar (Cooperación, La Habana, 1947), antes de viajar durante dos años como marinero en un barco mercante por los Estados Unidos, Canadá y América central. En 1953, de nuevo en Cuba, ingresó por oposición en el Servicio Exterior y es nombrado Canciller en el Consulado cubano de Barcelona, y entre 1955 y 1962 ejerció como abogado, al tiempo que participó activamente en la vida cultural habanera como crítico literario y teatras en importantes revistas, hasta que en 1962 se marchó exiliado a California.
