Our vision of God varies by culture. It has changed over the millennia. We no longer believe in the pagan gods of the Romans and Greeks. Why should we expect that our current view of God will not change? Scientific knowledge and discovery is occurring at a pace never before experienced in human history. Yet our concept of God remains mired in the 15th century. This is about to change. It will become increasingly difficult for religions to convince believers educated in modern science to blindly accept as truth religious dogmas conceived centuries ago. Religious scripture is a combination of literature, myth and superstition. Science will invalidate many of these myths. This is why intelligent design advocates fear science.
This volume presents a selection of articles based on inspiring lectures held at the “Capri” Advanced Summer School, an original event conceived and promoted by Leonida Antonio Gizzi and Ralph Assmann that focuses on novel schemes for plasma-based particle acceleration and radiation sources, and which brings together researchers from the conventional accelerator community and from the high-intensity laser-matter interaction research fields. Training in these fields is highly relevant for ultra-intense lasers and applications, which have enjoyed dramatic growth following the development of major European infrastructures like the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) and the EuPRAXIA project. The articles preserve the tutorial character of the lectures and reflect the latest advances in their respective fields. The volume is mainly intended for PhD students and young researchers getting started in this area, but also for scientists from other fields who are interested in the latest developments. The content will also appeal to radiobiologists and medical physicists, as it includes contributions on potential applications of laser-based particle accelerators.
From Google search to self-driving cars to human longevity, is Alphabet creating a neoteric Garden of Eden or Bentham’s Panopticon? Will King Solomon’s challenge supersede the Turing test for artificial intelligence? Can transhumanism mitigate existential threats to humankind? These are some of the overarching questions in this book, which explores the impact of information awareness on humanity starting from the Book of Genesis to the Royal Library of Alexandria in the 3rd century BC to the modern day of Google Search, IBM Watson, and Wolfram|Alpha. The book also covers Search Engine Optimization, Google AdWords, Google Maps, Google Local Search, and what every business leader must know about digital transformation. “Search is curiosity, and that will never be done,” said Google’s first female engineer and Yahoo’s sixth CEO Marissa Mayer. The truth is out there; we just need to know how to Google it!
Presents 134 facsimiles of German documents (pp. 195-461), arranged chronologically. Pp. 59-193 contain a list of the documents in English, and translations of one-third of them into English, with summaries of the rest. The documents elucidate the role of the German Foreign Office in facilitating the Nazi racial policy. The introduction (pp. 11-57) presents an account of the events that led to the deportation of Greek Jews. The documents portray the cooperation between the Foreign Office and the Central Office of Reich Security, which resulted in the fact that only 12,000 of over 70,000 Greek Jews survived. The documents relate to five periods and subjects: data gathering, the delay in implementing the racial laws, the carrying out of the regulations and the deportation of Salonika's Jews, Foreign Office concern with the remaining non-Greek Jews, and the deportation of Jews from areas that the Germans took over from the "uncooperative" Italians. Concludes that the documents reveal the importance of personality and motivation in the conduct of the diplomats who participated in implementing the Final Solution.
English summary: Eve-Marie Becker studies the Gospel according to Mark, seeing it as the earliest gospel, and places it in the context of Hellenistic historiography (Greek, Roman and early Jewish). She examines the dating and the assimilation of events in contemporary history and analyzes their chronological and their causal structure. This historiographical approach to Mark serves various purposes, among which are the establishment of the historical value of the pre-Markan sources and the traditions and the acknowledgement of the 'historiographical achievement' of the editor Mark. The author shows the literary cognation of the 'Gospel' genre, but also its special place in the history of the...
