Mapping Migration
This edited collection examines culture and identity in Indian diaspora communities in Southeast Asia, and the UK. Using methodologies such as transnational and diaspora studies, history, autoethnography and family histories, the contributions here explore the movements of people from the Indian subcontinent across generations to a wide range of countries. Cultural practices including the use of performance, food, rituals, religion, education, employment, and names demonstrate how identities and practices are preserved, as well as adapted, in new contexts. This offers original insights into transnational movements of people, and how culture becomes a major part in the formation of a diaspora. The focus on Southeast Asia creates new knowledge by shifting the theoretical focus towards a region that shows great multiplicity in Indian migrant populations over a considerable period of time, but which has remained under-researched. The chapters on the UK act as a counterpoint to this, and contribute to the complex picture of shifting borders and practices across nations and generations.
Staging Muslims in Britain
This scholarly volume delves into the manner in which British Muslims articulate their cultural, social and religious identities through theatrical productions in 21st-century Britain and examines their portrayal within these performances. The study investigates the factors influencing the emergence and evolution of Islamic theatre in Britain, providing an in-depth analysis of plays by British playwrights of both Muslim and non-Muslim origins that have shaped the trajectory of British Islamic theatre from the late 20th century to the present. Önder Çakırtaş critically examines how British playwrights, predominantly of Muslim origin but also including some of non-Muslim origin, depict Muslim identity and culture from their unique perspectives, particularly in the context of post-9/11 society. Adopting a comprehensive approach to Islamic playwriting and performance, this book highlights the accomplishments and contributions of contemporary British playwrights, primarily from Muslim backgrounds. Contemporary Black and Asian Women Playwrights in Britain
This text was the first monograph to document and analyse the plays written by Black and Asian women in Britain. The volume explores how Black and Asian women playwrights theatricalize their experiences of migration, displacement, identity, racism and sexism in Britain. Plays by writers such as Tanika Gupta, Winsome Pinnock, Maya Chowdhry and Amrit Wilson, among others - many of whom have had their work produced at key British theatre sites - are discussed in some detail. Other playwrights' work is also briefly explored to suggest the range and scope of contemporary plays. The volume analyses concerns such as geographies of un/belonging, reverse migration (in the form of tourism), sexploitation, arranged marriages, the racialization of sexuality, and asylum seeking as they emerge in the plays, and argues that Black and Asian women playwrights have become constitutive subjects of British theatre.
