In dit boek wordt op basis van de theorieën van Gérard Genette, Michel Riffaterre en Harold Bloom een handig model ontwikkeld waarmee invloed beschreven wordt enkel uitgaande van tekstueel materiaal. Het vertrekpunt is steeds een intertekstuele relatie die de aanzet vormt om ook andere teksten van een auteur te toetsen aan het werk waaruit de intertekstuele link afkomstig is. Met behulp van die leesstrategie onderzoekt de auteur de invloed van Paul Celan op de Nederlandstalige poëzie. Celan, één van de belangrijkste moderne dichters van de twintigste eeuw, wordt door vele Nederlandstalige dichters een voorbeeld genoemd, maar tot nu toe werd die voorbeeldfunctie nooit grondig onderzocht.
