Titian to 1518

  • Categories: Art

The work that Titian produced during the first decade of his career is beautiful and varied, but it has raised many questions of attribution and chronology. This book - the first thorough and coherent account of this period in Titian's life - reconstructs what he painted, when he painted it and what these paintings mean. Paul Joannides begins by discussing the probable course of Titian's early career and his relationship to the Bellinis. There are individual excurses on Giorgione and on Sebastiano del Piombo whose work has often been confused with his. Joannides then offers new interpretations of some of Titian's paintings, emphasising their poetic and dramatic qualities. Among other topics, he associates for the first time the paintings in Saint Petersburg, Venice and Houston; lays out Titian's part of the Fondaco; connects the privately owned Resurrected Christ with the Fogg Circumcision; integrates the Dresden Venus and the Berlin Portrait into Titian's work; and establishes the dynamism and inventiveness of the great Assunta of 1516-18. Joannides provides detailed arguments in support of both new and familiar attributions, proposes a more closely reasoned and precise chronology

The drawings featured in this volume are from the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Eighteen sheets are supreme examples of Michelangelo's draftsmanship; fifty are by his contemporaries and successors - including Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, Perino del Vaga, Pordenone, and Annibale Carracci - and demonstrate Michelangelo's impact on their technique, style, and imagery. Among the other artists represented are Alessandro Allori, Bartolommeo Ammanati, Baccio.

In the autumn of 1644 was fought one of the most sustained and desperate sieges of the First Civil War when Scottish Covenanter forces under the Earl of Leven finally stormed Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the King’s greatest bastion in the north-east and the key to his power there. The city had been resolutely defended throughout the year by the Marquis of Newcastle, who had defied both the Covenanters and Northern Parliamentarians. Newcastle had held sway in the north-east since the outbreak of the war in 1642. He had defeated the Fairfaxes at Adwalton Moor and secured the City of Newcastle as the major coal exporter and port of entry for vital Royalist munitions and supply. Without this the north...

Masaccio & Masolino

  • Categories: Art

The names of Masaccio (1401-28) and Masolino (1383-1440) are inseparable, and their collaboration is an essential starting point for the study of either artist. Masaccio's Holy Trinity and the recently cleaned collaborative frescos in the Brancacci Chapel in Florence are key works in the development of Western art. Paul Joannides' catalogue raisonné forms a uniquely authoritative and perfectly up-to-date study of the total oeuvre of both artists. Composed with lucidity and richly illustrated, it makes accessible to all lovers of art - from the connoisseur to the casual reader - some of the greatest paintings of the early Renaissance, and most momentous works of Western painting.

Raphael was for centuries considered the greatest artist who ever lived. Much of what we know about him comes from this biography, written by Florentine painter Giorgio Vasari. The Life of Raphael is a key text not only for the appreciation of Raphael's art--whose development Vasari portrays in detail--but also for its unprecedented attention to theoretical issues. This stand-alone edition of The Life of Raphael, published to coincide with a major exhibition of the artist's paintings and drawings at England's National Gallery, illuminates the entire span of Raphael's astonishing art.

The immense effect that Michelangelo had on many artists working in the sixteenth century is widely acknowledged by historians of Italian Renaissance art. Yet until recently greater stress has been placed on the individuality of these artists' styles and interpretation rather than on the elucidation of their debts to others. There has been little direct focus on the ways in which later sixteenth-century artists actually confronted Michelangelo, or how those areas or aspects of their artistic production that are most closely related to his reveal their attitudes and responses to Michelangelo's work. Reactions to the Master presents the first coherent study of the influence exerted by Michelan...
