Background. During the global severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak, patients were treated with high dose ribavirin although its safety and efficacy were unknown. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of the completed Toronto SARS outbreak to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ribavirin in the treatment of SARS. Methods. The study population included all adult patients hospitalized with suspected SARS. Cases were classified as confirmed, excluded or indeterminate using microbiological methods.
