Paul's Understanding of the Church's Mission
This book engages in a careful study of Pauls letters to determine if the apostle expected the communities to which he wrote to engage in missionary activity. It helpfully summarizes the discussion on this debated issue, judiciously handling contested texts and provides a way forward in addressing this critical question. While admitting that Paul rarely explicitly commands the communities he founded to evangelize, Plummer amasses significant incidental data to provide a convincing case that Paul did indeed expect his churches to engage in mission activity. Throughout the study, Plummer progressively builds a theological basis for the churchs mission that is both distinctively Pauline and compelling.
The Beginnings of Christianity Volume 1
Paul Wernle (1872-1939) was a Swiss theologian born in Hottingen, today part of the city of Zürich. He studied at the Universities of Basel, Berlin and Göttingen. At Basel he was a student of Bernhard Duhm (1847-1928), and in Göttingen was influenced by Wilhelm Bousset (1865-1920). In 1900 he became an associate professor at Basel, where in 1905 he was appointed a full professor of New Testament Studies. During the course of his career he also taught classes in dogmatics, church history, et al. Wernle was a representative of the so called "Religionsgeschichtliche Schule" (History of Religions School). His expertise was in the field of New Testament analysis, and he is largely remembered for his work involving Synoptic and Pauline research.
The Holy Spirit and Ethics in Paul

From Jesus to Paul
The essays presented here intend to open afresh the complexity of the question of Paul’s dependence upon and continuity with Jesus. So much attention has been given in the past to this very difficult problem that new solutions are hard to find and suspect when offered. This collection, however, demonstrates diversity in approach, stance, and conclusion. The essays often take issue with the results of current research—including that of Francis Wright Beare, in whose honour they have been produced. They consider a broad range of the recent literature and show that no satisfactory solution has yet been found to the Jesus-Paul quesiton. Indeed, the debate may never be terminated. This collection, however, thoroughly illustrates the debate as it stands now. Of consuming importance to scholars of New Testament theology and text, the volume also admirably depicts the critical approaches that live today within the study of Christianity’s roots.
