This event was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, February 13-14, 2003. The conference,organized by the University of Santiago (USC), the University of A Coruna (UDC) and the Super computing Center of Galicia (CESGA), was promoted by the European Cross Grid project and supported by the Grid Start Cluster. In the Shadow of Vitoria: A History of International Law in Spain (1770-1953) offers the first comprehensive treatment of the intellectual evolution of international law in Spain from the late 18th century to the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Ignacio de la Rasilla del Moral recounts the history of the two ‘renaissances’ of Francisco de Vitoria and the Spanish Classics of International Law and contextualizes the ideological glorification of the Salamanca School by Franco’s international lawyers. Historical excursuses on the intellectual evolution of international law in the US and the UK complement the neglected history of international law in Spain from the first empire in history on which the sun never set to a diminished and fascistized national-Catholicist state.

The private enforcement of competition law through damages actions and/or injunctions before ordinary courts of justice is currently the preferred system in the United States. Bien es sabido que “cuando dejemos este mundo, no podremos llevarnos nada que hayamos recibido; solo lo que hayamos dado” (San Francisco de Asís). Este libro da buena cuenta de lo mucho que José María Castán dio. La rica y atractiva respuesta que tantos amigos han ofrecido a una propuesta de modesto homenaje así lo pone de manifiesto. Toda su vida la dedicó José María Castán al estudio del Derecho y, durante treinta años, a enseñarlo en su Universidad Pontificia Comillas, en ICADE. Numerosas publicaciones y conferencias mostraron que su inquietud jurídica no se detuvo en su querido Derecho de Familia, ni siquiera, en el Derecho civil.
