Understanding people on the earth and the way in which they think and act is a challenging feat, but even more difficult is understanding those who have left us. Additionally, ghosts themselves are often misunderstood. They can be lost souls with baggage hoping someone will notice their existence and lend an ear; not spectres with ill intent or out to harm the living. This book combines the expertise of two people who have had a multitude of encounters and have successfully made meaningful connections with several spirits throughout the years. This novel recounts 10 detailed situations and the conversations between Pernille, Laurens and a multitude of ghosts which each result in the unfoldin...
In this volume, case studies reveal that farm women in Africa, Asia and Latin America are rapidly becoming more than subsistence producers. It explores the societal and domestic changes brought about as women move to positions as wage labourers, contract growers and farm owners.
" ""The Ila Speaking"" is a record of life in a Central African village around a century ago. It originated in conversations recorded by Methodist missionaries as they attempted to learn the language and customs of the Ila people. Over the years 1906 to 1966 they collected over 12000 items. What began as a vocabulary with examples ended as the self-portrait of a people and a way of life. The author worked with the Ila from 1958 to 1966, later producing a ""Dictionary of Ila Usage"" (LIT Verlag 2000). The present book is a series of extracts from the dictionary arranged by subject, with a commentary. It is the author's hope that `the voices come over loud and clear to you the reader, and that you come away from this book with a feel for Ila humour, Ila life, and Ila reflections on people and their ways. I did, and I am sure you will too' (Professor Graham Furniss, School of Oriental and African Studies - London). "
One Saturday evening, the world’s smallest superheroes, Dappa and Nappa, hear the voice of a young boy saying: “Oh no! A scary dragon! It’s coming to get me!” The boy sounds very frightened, so Dappa and Nappa fly as fast as they can across the city to help him. They both have super powers, and they can hear what children say even if they’re far away. Dappa and Nappa reach the boy, whose name is Magnus, in a matter of seconds. They find him lying in his bed in his room and hiding under the covers. He’s certain that there’s a dragon under his bed. Are dragons dangerous? Is there really a dragon under the bed? And what can Dappa and Nappa do to help Magnus? This book is for children aged 4-5 years up to 8-9 years and is about a boy’s vivid imagination, thoughts and inner life. The book is full of humorous and beautiful illustrations. It’s a perfect bedtime story and the book can provide children and their parents a fun tool to tackle the runaway thoughts at night time.
This volume draws together a series of papers that present some of the most up-to-date thinking on the history, archaeology and toponymy of Wessex and Anglo-Saxon England more broadly. In honour of one of early medieval European scholarship’s most illustrious doyennes, no less than twenty-nine contributions demonstrate the indelible impression Barbara Yorke’s work has made on her peers and a generation of new scholars, some of whom have benefitted directly from her tutorage. From the identities that emerged in the immediate post-Roman period, through to the development of kingdoms, the role of the church, and impacts felt beyond the eleventh century, the rich and diverse character of the studies presented here are testimony to the versatility and extensive range of the honorand’s contribution to the academic field.
Whereas chronic stress has well known harmful effects, recent research shows that intermittent exposure of cells and organisms to mild stress can improve various biological parameters. This book brings together some of the world leaders in this area of research who present a critical analysis of the ongoing research with respect to the effects and mechanisms of action of various types of mild stress. Novel approaches to improving health and longevity are introduced.
Small and micro enterprises have been an important theme in development thinking since 1950s, yet for a variety of reasons East African governments and administrations have been sceptical about their role in their own countries' development. While many constraints have been lifted by the more liberal policies of the 1990s, many micro entrepreneurs and their labourers, primarily women, are still fighting for an enlarged social space. The papers in this book describe these strategies of negotiation between rural micro enterprises and the new liberalised rural economy.
Unlike the first two volumes of "ANGLES" on the English-Speaking World, this special issue does not originate in a set of conference papers. The idea of compiling a collection of essays on Romanticism emerged from the unusually strong concentration on Romantic studies among the graduate students of the English Department a couple of years ago. This volume places their work in the context of distinguished international scholars of greater seniority, scholars who have become academic contacts through conferences and assessment committees, and whose contributions I am very pleased to be able to include alongside the works of local contributors. The Romantic generations of the title of this volu...
The EU Commission has set the goal of facilitating a competitive transport system, increasing mobility and supporting growth while simultaneously reaching a target of 60 per cent emissions reductions by 2050. In light of past performance and estimated development, the target will not be reached without further behavioural change in the transport sector. This interdisciplinary book examines how such a behavioural shift can be achieved by various organizational and legal means, focusing primarily on the European Union and its specific policies related to greening transport.
