Quantum Theory

This book was inspired by the general observation that the great theories of modern physics are based on simple and transparent underlying mathematical structures – a fact not usually emphasized in standard physics textbooks – which makes it easy for mathematicians to understand their basic features. It is a textbook on quantum theory intended for advanced undergraduate or graduate students: mathematics students interested in modern physics, and physics students who are interested in the mathematical background of physics and are dissatisfied with the level of rigor in standard physics courses. More generally, it offers a valuable resource for all mathematicians interested in modern physics, and all physicists looking for a higher degree of mathematical precision with regard to the basic concepts in their field.

This book studies the foundations of quantum theory through its relationship to classical physics. This idea goes back to the Copenhagen Interpretation (in the original version due to Bohr and Heisenberg), which the author relates to the mathematical formalism of operator algebras originally created by von Neumann. The book therefore includes comprehensive appendices on functional analysis and C*-algebras, as well as a briefer one on logic, category theory, and topos theory. Matters of foundational as well as mathematical interest that are covered in detail include symmetry (and its "spontaneous" breaking), the measurement problem, the Kochen-Specker, Free Will, and Bell Theorems, the Kadison-Singer conjecture, quantization, indistinguishable particles, the quantum theory of large systems, and quantum logic, the latter in connection with the topos approach to quantum theory. Mathematical Physics X

th This volume contains the proceedings of the X Congress of the Interna tional Association of Mathematical Physics, held at the University of Leipzig from 30 July until 9 August 1991. There were more than 400 participants, from 29 countries, making it a truly international gathering. The congress had the support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the European Economic Community, the International Association of Math ematical Physics, the International Mathematical Union and the Interna tional Union of Pure and Applied Physics. There were also sponsors from in dustry and commerce: ATC Mann, Deutsche Bank AG, Miele & Cie GmbH, NEC Deutschland GmbH, Rank Xerox, Siemens AG and Stiftungsfon...

This book describes a formalism to describe simultaneously and side by side classical and quantum physical systems. It is mathematically completely equivalent to the standard description, but it makes it more easy to compare the two type of systems. It is attractive because it unifies different systems, but it has also interesting applications, some of which are discussed in this book. There is a very important application, namely to the interpretation of quantum theory, a subject on which an enormous literature exists. With this formalism it can be rigorously shown that most of this literature is erroneous, or irrelevant, at best. This will be treated in a future publication. Peter Bongaarts taught for 35 years theoretical and mathematical physics at the University of Leiden. In 2015 he published "Quantum Theory. A Mathematical Approach."

Confronting AIDS

This revised and updated edition of the pathbreaking report on the global AIDS epidemic outlines the strategic role that government must play in slowing the spread of HIV and mitigating the impact of AIDS. Drawing on the knowledge accumulated in the 17 years since the virus that causes AIDS was first identified, the report highlights policies that are most likely to be effective in managing the epidemic. These include early actions to minimize the spread of the virus, aiming preventive interventions at high risk groups, and evaluating measures that would assist households affected by AIDS according to the same standards applied to other health issues. This revised edition will a valuable resource for public health, policymakers, researchers, and anyone with an interest in this devastating global health crisis.
