Geschichte Frankreichs
Frankreich hat wie kein anderes Land die Geschichte Europas geprägt. Der Hof und die absolutistische Herrschaft LudwigsXIV. waren lange Zeit Vorbild für europäische Herrscher. Seit dem Mittelalter und erst recht seit der Aufklärung gehörten französische Denker zur europäischen Avantgarde. Die Französische Revolution und Napoleon haben ganz Europa grundlegend umgestaltet. Von Anfang an hat der westliche Nachbar Deutschlands eine führende Rolle in der Europäischen Union gespielt. Peter C. Hartmann beschreibt die Geschichte Frankreichs knapp, übersichtlich und umfassend von der Bildung des Westfränkischen Reiches im Frühmittelalter bis zur Gegenwart. Er berücksichtigt dabei nicht nur die politische Geschichte, sondern auch die wesentlichen Entwicklungen in Kultur, Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft. Seine kleine Geschichte eines großen Landes gilt inzwischen als Standardwerk.
Bayern und Europa
In der Festschrift zum 65. Geburtstag von Peter Claus Hartmann werden 26 Beiträge unter dem Gesamtthema «Bayern und Europa» vereint. Sie bieten einen faszinierenden Überblick der europäischen und bayerischen Geschichte vom Hochmittelalter bis in unsere Tage. Nicht nur Bayern, sondern besonders auch der europäische und internationale Blick wird von verschiedenen Autoren beleuchtet. Dabei wurde dank des interdisziplinären Ansatzes neben historischen auch musikhistorischen und kirchengeschichtlichen Themen Raum eingeräumt. Somit entsteht für den Leser ein breites Bild der Geschichte und Kulturgeschichte Bayerns in Europa und der Welt.
Die Jesuiten
Es gibt nur wenige Gruppierungen, die so umstritten waren und sind wie die "Gesellschaft Jesu". Die einen sahen in dem nach militärischem Vorbild organisierten Jesuitenorden den Inbegriff von Intoleranz, Scheinheiligkeit und eines blinden "Kadavergehorsams". Von den anderen wurden die Jesuiten, die keine Ordenstracht und kein geregeltes Klosterleben kennen, wegen ihrer vielen Schulen und Universitäten gerühmt, wegen ihrer Verdienste um die barocke Kunst und Architektur bewundert und wegen ihres Einsatzes in der Mission verherrlicht. Dieses Buch beschreibt die faszinierende Geschichte des bedeutendsten Ordens der Neuzeit von seiner Gründung kurz nach der Reformation über Verfolgung und Verbot im 18. Jahrhundert, die Wiedergründung im 19. Jahrhundert und erneute Verfolgungen im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, vor allem im "Dritten Reich", bis hin zur Gegenwart. Besondere Beachtung findet dabei die Kulturgeschichte des Ordens.
Münchens Weg in die Gegenwart
2008 feiert Munchen den 850. Jahrestag seiner Erstnennung. Die beiden aus diesem Anlass erscheinenden Bande laden zu Streifzugen durch die Geschichte und die Kunstgeschichte der Stadt von 1158 bis heute ein: kompakt, kenntnisreich, unter Einbeziehung neuer Forschungsergebnisse und reich illustriert mit aktuellen Fotografien und historischen Abbildungen.
Early Modern European Diplomacy
New Diplomatic History has turned into one of the most dynamic and innovative areas of research – especially with regard to early modern history. It has shown that diplomacy was not as homogenous as previously thought. On the contrary, it was shaped by a multitude of actors, practices and places. The handbook aims to characterise these different manifestations of diplomacy and to contextualise them within ongoing scientific debates. It brings together scholars from different disciplines and historiographical traditions. The handbook deliberately focuses on European diplomacy – although non-European areas are taken into account for future research – in order to limit the framework and ensure precise definitions of diplomacy and its manifestations. This must be the prerequisite for potential future global historical perspectives including both the non-European and the European world.

This is the second of three volumes based on papers given at the 'Fragile Tradition' conference in Cambridge, 2002. Together they provide a conspectus of current research on the cultural, historical and literary imagination of the German-speaking world across the whole of the modern period.
