Peter Dawson

Peter Dawson, the Australian bass baritone who became the most widely recorded singer in history, is remembered today by some as the voice of British imperialism, of Kipling's Boots' and The Road to Mandalay'; and by others as the man who made Waltzing Matilda' the anthem it is today. In his record-breaking career from 1904 to 1958 he made nearly 2000 recordings, from cylinders to LPs, in a more diverse repertoire than any other artist in history. But his recording career with HMV and EMI was only a tenth of his career as a touring concert artist and entertainer to metropolitan centres and outposts of the British empire. In this, Dawson's first and definitive biography, the basso Russell Smith and sound archivist Peter Burgis, have revealed a tough-minded, dedicated artist who was also a bon viveur and practical joker whose personality, as much as his voice, contributed to his universal popularity.

A Better Way

For nearly 60 years dentists from around the world have traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida to attend Peter Dawson's seminars on "The Concept of Complete Dentistry.¿" He's personally taught more than 50,000 of those practitioners. In the process he literally redefined dentistry and its standard of care by challenging his professional peers to raise their sites beyond "usual and customary" practices, to become true physicians of the masticatory system. But the most important reason for reading this book? It's the promise reflected in its title and in Pete Dawson's life-long quest to discover A Better Way. A Better Way to practice dentistry, for sure. But also, A Better Way to define success. A Better Way to balance the demands of a career with the needs of a family. In short, A Better Way to live.

Ultrasound in Liquid and Solid Metals focuses on the effect of intensive ultrasound on metals, including the analysis of the development of cavitation and acoustic flows in melts, mechanism of metals' spraying and crystallization, the formation of dislocation structure in crystals, diffusion, phase transformation, and plastic deformation. Physical fundamentals of intensive ultrasound effects are covered, and detailed discussions are presented on the engineering principles of equipment and material design for the practical use of ultrasound in the refining of melts, crystallization of ingots and molds, pulverization, plating, pressure working of metals, surface strengthening, and other processes.

Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry and Its Applications

Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry and Its Applications provides a comprehensive discussion of quadrupoles and their applications. It proceeds from a general explanation of the action of radiofrequency quadrupole fields to the description of their utilization in mass analyzers—such as the quadrupole mass filter, the monopole, the three-dimensional quadrupole ion trap, and various time-of-flight spectrometers—and finally to the characteristic applications of quadrupoles. A multi-author format has been adopted to provide broader-than-usual viewpoint in the book. The book begins by explaining the principles of operation of quadrupole devices. These include ion trajectories and computer simulations of performance; analytical theory; numerical methods of calculation of performance, including the recently developed application of phase-space dynamics; and fringing fields and other field imperfections. Subsequent chapters provide design and performance evaluations of the mass filter, the monopole, ion traps, and time-of-flight instruments; and describe areas of application where quadrupole devices have made the greatest impact because of their particular advantages and disadvantages.

Carry On, Teachers!

In the world of screen culture, teachers are unfailingly represented as charismatic figures, able to tackle the deprivations their students face and to form special relationships with them that none of their staff colleagues can. But how realistic are such representations, and-- more importantly - what do real world teachers think about their reel world counterparts? This book takes a closer look at the charismatic teacher as portrayed in films such as Blackboard Jungle, "To Sir, With Love" and "Dead Poets Society" and in television series such as Teachers. It considers the eccentric, resilient or romantic - but always charismatic- teacher in inner city schools, private or public schools and contrasts them with the views of practising teachers. "Carry on Teachers" will be essential to media and cultural studies courses but is designed as much for teachers and those coming into the profession.
