The Policies of Inclusion

Welfare policies and the ideas of well-being are linked with the ideas of good life. However, the meaning of good life, i.e. what is considered as ‘good life’ gets its meanings contextually. This means that we need to study the ideas of good life in time. The ideas of good life express social and political values and they are articulated in particular terms in particular time and place. The changing ideas of welfare and the ideas of changing approaches on welfare, well-being and knowledge production related to them have been discussed widely in international and Finnish research contexts. This volume is the second – and last – part of publications which stem from the 20th Anniversary Seminar of the Research Unit on Disability at University of Eastern Finland. It offers a multivoiced collection of research discussions from research in the fields of welfare and inclusion.

Long before it took political shape in the proclamation of the German Empire of 1871, a German nation-state had taken shape in the cultural imagination. Covering the period from the Seven Years’ War to the Reichsgründung of 1871, Nationalism before the Nation State: Literary Constructions of Inclusion, Exclusion, and Self-Definition (1756–1871) explores how the nation was imagined by different groups, at different times, and in connection with other ideologies. Between them the eight chapters in this volume explore the connections between religion, nationalism and patriotism, and individual chapters show how marginalised voices such as women and Jews contributed to discourses on national identity. Finally, the chapters also consider the role of memory in constructing ideas of nationhood. Contributors are: Johannes Birgfeld, Anita Bunyan, Dirk Göttsche, Caroline Mannweiler, Alex Marshall, Dagmar Paulus, Ellen Pilsworth, and Ernest Schonfield.

Annette Schemmel provides a highly illuminating case study of the major actors, discourses and paradigm that shaped the history of visual arts in Cameroon during the second part of the 20th century. Her book meticulously reconstructs the multiple ways of artistic knowledge acquisition - from the consolidation of the "Système de Grands Frères" in the 1970s to the emergence of more discursively oriented small artists' initiatives which responded to the growing NGO market of social practice art opportunities in the 2000s. Based on archival research, participant observation and in depth interviews with art practitioners in Douala and Yaoundé, this study is a must read for everyone who wants to better understand the vibrant artistic scenes in countries like Cameroon, which until today lack a proper state-funded infrastructure in the arts.
