Originally published in 1990, this book brought a new rigor and subtlety to the interpretation of film adaptations of Shakespeare. Drawing on traditional literary analysis, psychoanalysis, and current film theory about gender and subjectivity, the author combines close readings of seven films with historical and biographical studies of the directors who made them. Offering substantial readings of Jean-Luc Godard’s controversial deconstructed King Lear and of Liz White’s independent African-American Othello, Donaldson also applies his provocative and contemporary point of view to more familiar films. The electronic presentation of text has revolutionized the understanding and use of literary evidence. Formerly, readers and editors were obliged to choose one edition of a text in book form to work with and to treat other versions as ancillary. Now electronic editions of a text can incorporate all the various versions and revisions. This allows unconstrained access to a much greater range of information. This collection considers the role of computerized technology in contributing to the interpretation and editing of texts, from both practical and theoretical perspectives. The contributors investigate the ways in which the treatment of texts and the idea of a "text" are affected by current and prospective advances in electronic production and reproduction.

Hume and Machiavelli
Although there are myriad references to Machiavelli's work within Hume's writing, a deeper connection between the two has never been fully explored. Whelan uncovers extensive Machiavellian dimensions throughout Hume's work, illustrating numerous parallels in both theorists' treatment of such issues as human nature, historical method, and political ethics. While at first such a comparison may be startling, Whelan argues convincingly that Hume's writing, commonly regarded as moderate and amiable, is indeed a locus of realist liberal political theory.
