National Minorities in Serbian Academia
This book offers an intersectional analysis of secondary and tertiary educational pathways of ethnic Hungarians, Romanians and Slovaks in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia. After a detailed overview of the legal and institutional context of national minority education in Serbia, the book presents qualitative and quantitative research results to illuminate the often invisible linguistic and cultural barriers that national minority high school graduates, university students and faculty may encounter. The author also focuses on the position of national minority women in Serbian higher education and academia, shedding light on the very gendered nature of the ‘glass ceiling’ that often holds members of national minority communities back from career building. This book will be of interest to policymakers seeking nuanced interpretations of multifocal inequalities, as well as academics in fields such as gender studies, migration studies, minority languages and communities, and the sociology of education.
An Education in Sexuality and Sociality
While hook-up culture on university campuses represents a part of the story, it is only part of the story. It is important to add to this and investigate the way the university itself brokers and seeks out specific forms of sexuality, sex, and connection amongst students. This booksheds light on how the university as an institution endorses certain forms of sociality, sexuality, and coupling, while excluding others. The Forgotten Massacre
The book discusses a formerly unknown and invisible massacre in Budapest in 1944, committed by a paramilitary group lead by a women. Andrea Pető uncovers the gripping history of the fi rst private Holocaust memorial erected in Budapest in 1945. Based on court trials, interviews with survivors, perpetrators, and investigators, the book illustrates the complexities of gendered memory of violence. It examines the dramatic events: massacre, deportation, robbery, homecoming, and fi ght for memorialization from the point of view of the perpetrators and the survivors. Voices from Gender Studies
The book is aimed at providing an assertion of Gender Studies as a vital community in our time, united in a commitment to inquiry. It brings forward an interdisciplinary set of early career researchers’ accounts of their motives for engaging in Gender Studies and, of the encounters with limitations as well as possibilities they experience on the paths they have chosen. Each chapter is accompanied by a brief response paper where a more senior researcher involves in conversation with respective chapter’s content and shares reflections regarding Gender Studies, its integration, and developments. The first level corresponds with the significance of research in the field and its transformative power in and, crucially, outside the academia. The Women of the Arrow Cross Party
This book analyses the actions, background, connections and the eventual trials of Hungarian female perpetrators in the Second World War through the concept of invisibility. It examines why and how far-right women in general and among them several Second World War perpetrators were made invisible by their fellow Arrow Cross Party members in the 1930s and during the war (1939-1945), and later by the Hungarian people’s tribunals responsible for the purge of those guilty of war crimes (1945-1949). It argues that because of their ‘invisibilization’ the legacy of these women could remain alive throughout the years of state socialism and that, furthermore, this legacy has actively contributed to the recent insurgence of far-right politics in Hungary. This book therefore analyses how the invisibility of Second World War perpetrators is connected to twenty-first century memory politics and the present-day resurgence of far-right movements.
