They did not at first undertake to form chapters, or branches, as they called them, in other colleges, but in other towns in Virginia, and designated these chapters as Beta, Gamma, Delta, and so on. Whether this was actually done or not does not appear, but it furnished a precedent that was extremely important, inasmuch as it was the actual salvation of the society.
