The Voice of Pleasure makes a persuasive and fascinating argument that the romantic couple of Western representation is not heterosexual. Nor is it homosexual. With insightful new readings of landmarks of Western culture from Tristan and Yseut to Seinfeld , Callahan demonstrates that the illusion of heterosexuality is created by a male artist's assumption of a feminine voice to express desire. Named the 'troubadour effect' for the first time here, this tradition of male femininity in romantic writing results in a cultural model of desire best described as 'heterosexuality without women.' The most compelling aspect of the book is its attention to the effect of this paradox on women writers. Illuminating her argument with striking examples from the 'troubairitz' to Toni Morrison, the author shows how women writers inscribe their 'vagabondage,' a term she coins to name the consequences of the 'troubadour effect' for women's agency, as both writers and lovers.

Repetition and Creation

This book advances the notion of autotextuality, the dialogue between works in an author’s oeuvre, and the ways in which new texts are created in self-repetition through the tracing and revisiting of past texts and the subsequent uncovering of undisclosed meanings, unexhausted constructive principles, and alternative versions. Kolarov draws on cognitive models, such as dual coding theory and conceptual blending, to substantiate a theory of autotextuality and build on previous work on self-repetition and difference to highlight the notion of “discursive desire,” in which new meanings are generated through repetition, and its distinct relationship to creativity. Drawing on analyses of we...

Lacan and the Ghosts of Modernity

To understand the achievement of Jacques Lacan, one must turn to his roots. This book explores the grounding of Lacan's psychoanalytic work in the intellectual and artistic movements of the modernist period. More specifically, it examines masculine anxiety in the modernist novel in terms of Lacan's work on psychosis, masochism, and narcissism, viewed against the broader cultural context of the modernist era. In the process, this book illustrates how Lacan's intellectual apprenticeships and encounters (both real and imaginary) play out in his mature work, beginning with the first seminars of the 1950s. Like other thinkers of the early twentieth century, the trajectory of Lacan's psychoanalytic career is shaped by tendentious confrontations with peers, forebears, and intellectual traditions.

Reframing Translators, Translators as Reframers

This collection explores the notion of reframing as a framework for better understanding the multi-agent and multi-level nature of the translation process, generating new conversations in current debates on translational agency, authority, and power. The volume puts forward reframing as an alternative metaphor to traditional conceptualizations and descriptions of translation, which often position the process in such terms as transformation, reproduction, transposition, and transfer. Chapters in the book reflect on the translator figure as a central agent in actively moving a translated text to a new context, and the translation process as shaped by different forces and subjectivities when tr...

This number of Marcel Proust Aujourd’hui, ‘Swann at 100/Swann à 100 ans’, edited by Adam Watt, has its origins in a conference that took place in Exeter, UK, in December 2013 to celebrate the centenary of the publication of Du côté de chez Swann. The articles, in English and French, approach this first volume of A la recherche du temps perdu from various perspectives: there are reception studies, thematic and stylistic studies, as well as contributions to our knowledge of the cultural and intellectual history of the period and, in particular, that annus mirabilis 1913. ‘Swann at 100’ will be an important resource for all readers of the Recherche. Ce numéro de Marcel Proust Aujo...
