The Grenadiers à Cheval of the Imperial Guard, were the shock troops of the guard, who were committed in battle as a final reserve at a crucial moment to turn the tide to victory for the French. Charging at Marengo where they were badly bloodied by the Austrians in their first battle, they again charged decisively at Austerlitz and Eylau, and bore the brunt of the fighting from 1813, when they were expanded to two regiments. Of the regiments of the Guard, the Grenadiers à Cheval has not been widely studied or been the subject of in-depth research. The book brings together much of what is known about the Grenadiers from the regiments archive held in France and contemporary iconography to chart in detail the regiments history and uniform in minute detail. Using primary archival material held in France, this work presents the first in-depth study on this well known but little researched regiment.

The first book by the great French radical historian Maurice Dommanget (1888–1976) to be translated into English, this book is an engaging, sympathetic telling of the life and works of Sylvain Maréchal (1750–1803), an unjustly forgotten figure of the French Revolutionary era. Maréchal was not only a militant atheist and opponent of royalty, but, as the author of the Manifesto of the Equals he laid the groundwork for modern communism. With an introduction by Jean-Numa Ducange.

Pierre and Jean is a naturalist or psycho-realist work written by Guy de Maupassant. Pierre and Jean are the sons of Gérôme Roland, a jeweller who has retired to Le Havre, and his wife Louise. Pierre works as a doctor, and Jean is a lawyer. It recounts the story of a middle-class French family whose lives are changed when Léon Maréchal, a deceased family friend, leaves his inheritance to Jean. This provokes Pierre to doubt the fidelity of his mother and the legitimacy of his brother. Pierre discovers that his theories about his brother's illegitimacy are correct when he finds and reads old letters that his mother and Léon Marechal had been sending to each other. This investigation spark...

Randy Bryan Bigham reclaims the story of a life forgotten. Finding Dorothy, the first biography of model and actress Dorothy Gibson (1889-1946), provides an analysis of her work as the muse of artist Harrison Fisher, and offers a critique of her brief but successful career as one of the first leading ladies in American silent cinema. Dorothy Gibson's experiences in the 1912 sinking of the Titanic are related in detail as is the making of Saved From the Titanic, the first motion picture produced about the disaster, in which Dorothy herself starred. 6x9 Hardcover Dust Jacket 179 pp, 84 ill. A Race with Infamy

On June 11, 1955, Lance Macklin became a central player in motor racing's worst tragedy. Not only did that day at Le Mans scar him forever, but it went on to become his most lasting legacy. Who, many over the years have asked, was that ‘gentleman driver’ in the Healey? One thing's for sure: he was no amateur. That day overshadowed the remarkable career of one of British racing's leading lights, of a driver who befriended and mentored champions, who was stunningly quick on the track and charming off it. Featuring a wealth of archival material and new interviews, this book finally tells the fascinating story of one of motorsport's most underrated and misunderstood talents.
