Young designer Piet Hein Eek is an established figure in the international scene and in particular in his home country of Holland. From his initial training at Design Academy Eindhoven, his career has unfolded to encompass the production of everthing from furniture, lighting and accessories to mejor interiors and buildings. He distinguishes himself from his contemporaries by his unique self-production facility in Geldrop, where his honestly constructed designs are conceived and are then built by his skilled workshop team. Every one of his projects is informed by his profound fascination and understanding of materials, machines and processes. This book charts his progression and highlights significant moments in the development of new projects. His outstanding portfolio is showcased chronologically, offering a rare insight into the design process as well as the final outcome. Illustrated with over 800 images, this is the first publication on one of the most exciting and prolific designers working in Holland today.

Making Marks

A rich and varied glimpse into the creative processes of a broad array of contemporary architects. While digital technologies have pushed the boundaries of architectural creation, conceiving an original and appropriate design is as challenging as it has always been. As this book shows, however, a recent return to the basic act of putting pen or pencil to paper has produced some of the most successful buildings of the past decade. Making Marks follows the highly successful Architects’ Sketchbooks, which presented the rich breadth of sketches created by contemporary architects post digital revolution. Taking a post-digital perspective, the sixty renowned architects whose work is collected he...

The Furniture Collection Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 1850-2000

The Stedelijk Museum opened its doors in 1895, the same year as the first Venice Biennale. It was a "quiet, civilized museum for the Amsterdam bourgeoisie in a time when there was nothing as troublesome as modern art." Initially, the museum exhibited the legacy of the eccentric Sophia Augusta de Bruyn, Douairire Lopez Suasso: a heterogeneous collection of antiques, coins, jewels, timepieces, silver knickknacks, and other curiosa. Period rooms, from canal houses that had been demolished when Raadhuisstraat was driven through, helped create a presentable whole. The museum's renowned furniture collection was not begun until 1934, but since then it has grown to include more than 1000 objects fro...

Against the Grain

  • Categories: Art

Focusing on some of the most interesting conceptual technical trends in wood working today, Against the Grain includes approximately 65 vessels, sculptures, furniture, and installations, created since 2000, which provocatively defy categories and celebrate the visual dynamics of wood. The book demonstrates how contemporary creators have engaged the medium of wood in strategies that might be described as “postmodern,” employing mimicry, assemblage, virtuosity, and whimsy (with a serious purpose). Environmental issues also are prominently addressed. Artists represented include Derek Bencomo, Gary Carsley, Hunt Clark, Piet Hein Eek, David Ellsworth, Sebastian Errazuriz, Bud Latven, Mark Lindquist, Thomas Loeser, Sarah Oppenheimer, William Pope.L, Martin Puryear, Marc Andre Robinson, Laurel Roth, Betye Saar, Courtney Smith, Elisa Strozyk, Alison Elizabeth Taylor, and Ursula von Rydingsvard.
