Regional and local responses in Portugal in the context of marginalization and globalization
The IGU currently has 34 commissions. Of these, CO.27 - Marginalization, Globalization, and Regional and Local Responses has, at various levels, geographers from the University of Coimbra. The organization of this publication is the outcome of the involvement of members of the Centro de Estudos de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território (CEGOT) in meetings of the International Geographical Union Marginalization, Globalization, and Regional and Local Responses commission. A series of works that analyse various socio-economic, demographic and physical realities in mainland Portugal are presented. Focusing particularly on territories in Central Portugal these works do, in fact, clarify the diversity of the importance of Coimbra's School of Geography in Portuguese geographical research. This work therefore contemplates a spread of research issues that cover the potential and problems of society and the environment in Portugal, and it is certainly helpful to understanding Portugueses society in the early 21st century.
Perspectives on Music, Sound and Musicology
This book gathers a set of works highlighting significant advances in the areas of music and sound. They report on innovative music technologies, acoustics, findings in musicology, new perspectives and techniques for composition, sound design and sound synthesis, and methods for music education and therapy. Further, they cover interesting topics at the intersection between music and computing, design and social sciences. Chapters are based on extended and revised versions of the best papers presented during the 6th and 7th editions of EIMAD–Meeting of Research in Music, Arts and Design, held in 2020 and 2021, respectively, at the School of Applied Arts in Castelo Branco, Portugal. As the first book of its kind, Nancy Lee Harper’s Portuguese Piano Music: An Introduction and Annotated Bibliography fills the gap in the historical record of Portuguese piano music from its start in the 18th century to the present. While although Spanish piano music is well documented owing to the reputation of such composers as Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, and Manuel de Falla, our knowledge of compositions in the tradition of Portuguese piano music has not fared as well, barring the work of Carlos Seixas (1704–1742).
