This record of the yearly meetings, minutes, rules, and members of the Whig Vigilance Committee in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, covers the years 1844 to 1850. During this time the Democratic Party maintained a stronghold over the state, but Whigs remained a lively presence. This record book begins in June 1844, when the committee met to choose delegates to the state convention. They often met Monday and Friday nights at the Franklin House in Portsmouth, members' homes, or the third story of a local store. They also hosted lectures at the Temple, which they rented for a dollar, and had an interest in hearing talks on Texas, singers performing works from the Whig song book, and the Cilley duel, a fatal conflict between Democratic and Whig congressmen. The records end shortly after the election of town clerk, moderator, and selectmen in 1849.
