New Peace County

In 1573 the Guangdong Province county of Dongguan was divided into two arts, one of which was named Xin'an Xi an (New Peace County). Its 600 square miles of territory included all of what is now Hong Kong and the New territories. The new county was poor, sparsely populated and harassed by marauding bands of pirates and land-based ruffians. The Xin'an Xianzhi (Gazetteer of Xin'an County) was the combined work of local people and officials posted to the county. It dealt with the geography, history, economy, traditions and literature of the area and remains today the fullest source of information on pre-twentieth century Xin'an. This book looks at the 1819 edition of the gazetteer, the last rev...

This book considers urban development in China, highlighting links between China’s history and civilization and the rapid evolution of its urban forms. It explores the early days of urban dwelling in China, progressing to an analysis of residential environments in the industrial age. It also examines China’s modern and postmodern architecture, considered as derivative or lacking spiritual meaning or personality, and showcases how China's traditional culture underpins the emergence of China’s modern cities. Focusing on the notion of “courtyard spirit” in China, it offers a study of the urban public squares central to Chinese society, and examines the disruption of the traditional Square model and the rise and growth of new architectural models.

The Troubled Empire

This volume explores the history of China between the Mongol reunification of China in 1279 under the Yuan dynasty and the Manchu invasion four centuries later, explaining how climate changes profoundly affected the empire during this period. The Mongol takeover in the 1270s changed the course of Chinese history. The Confucian empire, a millennium and a half in the making, was suddenly thrust under foreign occupation. What China had been before its reunification as the Yuan dynasty in 1279 was no longer what it would be in the future. Four centuries later, another wave of steppe invaders would replace the Ming dynasty with yet another foreign occupation.

Academic libraries often act as catalysts for progress and innovation; proper management and applications of these resources is key to promote further research. Academic Library Development and Administration in China provides a resource to promote Sino-U.S. communication and collaboration between their academic libraries. In considering the relationship between China and the West, this publication serves as a timely reflection on the expanding global field of information science. This publication is intended for librarians, researchers, university administrators, and information scientists in both the U.S. and China.
