Proceedings of the International Conference on Advanced Mechanical Engineering, Automation, and Sustainable Development 2021 (AMAS2021)
This book presents selected, peer-reviewed proceedings of the International Conference on Advanced Mechanical Engineering, Automation and Sustainable Development 2021 (AMAS2021), held in the city of Ha Long, Vietnam, from November 4 to 7, 2021. AMAS2021 is a special meeting of the International Conference on Material, Machines and Methods for Sustainable Development (MMMS), with a strong focus on automation and fostering an overall approach to assist policy makers, industries, and researchers at various levels to position local technological development toward sustainable development. The contributions published in this book stem from a wide spectrum of research, ranging from micro- and nanomaterial design and processing, to special applications in mechanical technology, environmental protection, green development, and climate change mitigation. A large group of contributions selected for these proceedings also focus on modeling and manufacturing of ecomaterials.
Original Sin
Space technology was developed to enhance the killing power of the state. The Moon landings and the launch of the Space Shuttle were mere sideshows, drawing public attention away from the real goal: military and economic control of space as a source of power on Earth. Eight years of immediate technical assistance activities strengthening emergency preparedness for HPAI in Viet Nam
The history of the battle to control HPAI in Viet Nam is relatively short but within the past 10 years there have been many insights developed, as well as some twists and turns in the road to the current level of success. As the concerted HPAI effort supported by FAO is coming to an end, albeit to be adapted into a broader One Health approach to animal health and zoonotic diseases, it was considered timely that a retrospective overview of the programme be produced to capture key elements and lessons that have arisen. This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the International Conferences ICCASA and ICTCC 2020, held in November 2020 in Thai Nguyen, Vietnam. Extracting Development
Resource extraction is currently shaping Southeast Asian landscapes and people’s lives to an unprecedented degree. This volume explores old and new resource frontiers, their effect on local economies and social relations, and questions of (contested) resource control and governance. Case studies from Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia, illustrate the predicament of globalized extractivism processes in the region, particularly (but not only) with regard to China’s rising geopolitical and -economic influence, most prominently expressed by the Belt and Road Initiative. Discussing transboundary investments in land and water reserves, and localized commodification processes of agrarian resources, this volume not only investigates the competing actors and discourses of resource extraction in Southeast Asia. What is more, the different case studies shed light on the contingent outcomes on the ground of transregional economic dynamics and related socio-ecological transformations. Combining macro perspectives with fine-grained micro-scale studies, this volume offers a multi-faceted picture of extractivism in contemporary Southeast Asia.
