Dünyada özellikle Orta Doğu, Orta Asya ve Afrika coğrafyasında taşıma, turistik, yarış ve gıda amaçlı olarak yetiştirilmiştir. Deve yetiştiriciliği, gelişen teknoloji altında giderek azalmakla birlikte günümüzde birçok ülkede zorlu iklim şartlarında çeşitli amaçlara yönelik olarak yetiştirilmektedir. Türkiye’de ise çiftlik hayvanı amaçlı olarak oldukça kısıtlı düzeyde yetiştiriciliği yapılmaktadır. Özellikle yörük yaşam tarzında ve Ege Bölgesi’nde deve yetiştiriciliği sürdürülmektedir.
