Wandering Joy
In this remarkable work, Reiner Schürmann shows Meister Eckhart, the thirteenth-century Christian mystic, as the great teacher of the birth of God in the soul, which shatters the dualism between God and the world, the self and God. The Wandering Beloved
Wanna know what the problem is? Its God. Deep down inside, in that quiet place in our heart and soul, the problem is we dont know if he is real. I was betrayed by the church, hurt by the leaders and the ones I looked up too, and embarassed about how Christians behave. So I walked away. For more than a decade I left it all behind, I didnt need God. I equated all the hurt and bitterness the church had caused me with God. But thats not God. After a decade focused on my career, my wealth, my happiness, my desires, I found myself on a wild adventure with God. Through the army, coaching professional hockey in Europe, helping victims of war in Burma, and a long walk in Spain, I slowly began to see the true nature and character of God. He wasnt into rules and religion, he didnt want me to memorize the Bible and follow all the traditions, he just wanted my heart. Through my struggle with depression I learned that God is real, not because of some warm fuzzy feeling I had one time, but I actually mathematically concluded that God is real. Wandering, Not Lost
A spiritual journey may take many forms, from Dante's descent to the pits of Hell and up the other side to the bliss of Paradise, to Pilgrim's progress (or even to Billy Pilgrim, unstuck in time in Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five). It could be Elijah running headlong into the desert, or Jonah being flung ashore and shouting in Nineveh, a petulant prophet to the end. Faith can be carried like pennies in the pocket or worn like a coat of many colors. Abraham and Moses, Mary and Peter--all of them carried their faith, and all of them had their doubts. Doubt is the companion of faith, and the mystery that bonds them together comes out in stories. These are stories of faith, doubt, and mystery. Not all who wander are lost.
